Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2001 24V lift pump diagnosis

Does the lift pump run on battery voltage, or do the computer controls lower the voltage to something substantially less than battery voltage?

I am thinking, for diagnostic purposes, of applying battery voltage to the pump to verify it runs and to try starting the engine with that guaranteed operation.

Does the pump cycle in normal operation, or does it run continuously?
