Hello,

I have a 2001 3/4 ton 4x4 with the 47RE. I’ve owned the truck for about a year now and don’t know much about the transmission. About two weeks ago it started to slip going into second. And now almost any time while in first will start going and then rev up to 1,500 RPM and then “clunk” into gear again, and the same happens going from 1st to 2nd and occasionally reverse. It will act like it’s in Neutral until I rev it and then it jolts into gear. Once the truck gets going and cruising it doesn’t happen until I come to a complete stop and then happens again. There is a small ATF leak, don’t think it’s connected I always have the fluid topped off and don’t really notice a difference. Wondering if this is just the transmission going bad and needs to be rebuilt, or if there are other things I can check first to avoid the cost of a full on rebuild? Any help is appreciated thanks!

Most likely what Cummins12V98 said, but maybe list the miles and if you know previous owner's use IE: daily driver, work truck, heavy hauler, etc. If you are around 140k miles and all stock, depending on PO use, it might be time for a rebuild. I'm with changing the Solenoid though as a first start. Check bottom of pan when you pull it to see if there's a ton of black schmutz and/or shiney metal flakes, a little of both is to be expected but if there's a ton and/or big pieces of metal for sure not good. Don't even think of buying parts at the local parts supplier or even NAPA (their NAPA usually pretty good but when it comes to trany parts...just MHO).
My trans builder recommended using Trans Star parts - here's a link https://transend.us/search/catalog/product/381354/details?search=governor solenoid 47RE&pageNumber=1

I had read on here the transducer is more prone to problems than the solenoid. I change both when I am in there as they are side by side as I do not want to drain and remove the pan again. It gets to be an expensive deal. Anyone else heard this ?.
