It looks like I have a leak at the rear seal. This seemed strange to me for a Cummins. Is this common? I am traveling; what should it cost to have it replaced? Is there anything else I can do? Senile owner PapaTom

Papatom, make sure it's your rear seal leaking and not something else. I thought my rear seal was leaking but when I took the inspection cover off at the transmission everything was dry. It turned out it was the side cover (lifter access cover) on the driver's side of the engine. It was leaking at the rear corner and running down and dripping of the bottom of oil pan and inspection cover.Go under the truck and look up to find an oil trail. Might be the rearmost part of the valvecover gasket also.I did my sidecover gasket myself, so I don't know what it would cost. It is NOT a small job.Good luck.

I see them leak all the time. Almost anything with any added power increased the crankshaft vibrations exponentially, which makes the crank walk and flex a lot more. Usually the front seal leaks, too. But at 150k, I can't say it's uncommon to leak a little, even stock. BUT, as stated above, make sure where the leak is coming from. With age, I've been seeing a lot more of the Tapett covers leaking, regardless of mileage, as well as the valve covers. I even have an '01 I put an engine in, and it came back for warranty with an oil leak. When we pulled the transmission back, the rear main area was dry.... We found the leak to be behind the engine adapter, leaking from the rear of the camshaft seal..... :(

Yes check tappet cover. Mine was leaking at 229k. Would be quart low by time to change oil. Was also afraid it was rear seal. Never did rear seal but did the tappet cover, not sure which is harder. Tappet cover took me about 8 hours taking time. To me hardest art was injector lines. Get the right tools for the lines, Geno's has them it will make life easier.
