lost the positrac clutches in our 2001. 5 3500 last week, took a week to get the whole unit replaced due to shortage, obviously, they have had problems here. when i say "they" i mean dana and dc. mechanics told me that this was right behind the fuel pump problems in heavy towing trucks. the first sign is a popping and squeaking noise, then as it goes there is a bad vibration, i firts thought of a broken shock, flat inner dually tire. the whole unit is replaced as a core, kind if like the old gertrag trannies... .

How many miles on your Truck? What was your maintenance on your diff. ? What type of fluid did you use? Did you add the DC snake oil when you changed fluid? Sorry for all of the questions, just want to know as much as possible.

Thanks

YUP - need LOTS more info - unlike plain differentials, limited slip jobbies need a certain amount of tender lovin' care for a long lifespan - and the proper lubes...

Lets have some details!;)

Mine too went out earlier this year, around 10,000 miles on truck then. They never told me exactly what went out, only that the whole posi unit had to be replaced.

Maybe from driving up and down KCIR a 1/4 mile at a time :-laf

We tow a 13,500 lb, 13' high 5ver in Texas summer conditions. We use Royal Purple 85W-140 synthetic and have never had a problem. Prior to this truck, we pulled this same 5ver and its 30' predecessor with a 1996 3500 using synthetic rear axle lube - again, no problems.

I guess it's strange to me that, if this is indeed second only to the lift pumps as a problem, we haven't heard more about it on this and other forums.

Why would it start on the 01. 5. I know the housing is different because of the disc brakes, but why would the carrier be different? Just curious.
