I figured we might as well start a new thread for the 01. 5 ETH/DEE waiting club. Sold the 99 auto about 4 weeks ago and turned in my order 01. 5 on 6/16. The new beast will be a 2500 QC 4x4 LWB HO 6sp, solid white w/agate leather and every thing but the snow plow prep.

BTW, the dealer is a 5 star dealer located in western Washington and said he would order any new truck for $50 over invoice, no strings attached. Email me for more info if you are interested.

What to do?
One opinion: Get the 3. 54, then go the aftermarket route.
Auburn Gear makes a great limited slip unit; I'd bet they have one that works with the Dana axle. Will cost more than the factory option, but is very strong unit and you'd also spend a lot of money in lower mpg over the years if you don't need the 4. 10 gearing.
Option 2, consider an ARB locker. Many don't like the cost, but, it gives you complete driver control over the locking, and as a bonus you get an on-board air compressor which can be handy for airing up tires.

Add me to the list. I sold my 1996 months ago to Nicolas from Hawaii and it has been a bummer being without my truck. I occasionally would get a fix by going to one of the local dealerd for a "test Drive. " Well on Friday, I drove a local ETH/DEE truck, but it was lacking a couple of things I wanted (no pwr seat, travel/conv. AND no two package -- figure that out on a 3500??). Anyway, after driving that one I had the fever so I figured no better time than the present to get the order in at Cedar Rapids Dodge on an invoice deal. So even though they said they couldn't order one yet, we sat down at the computer and input the order and it went AND it is under the new trcuk system as it shows the 4 wheel discs on the order. (I waited until the changeover as I wanted to get the 4WDiscs)

So I might as well run down the order for you... .

3500, QC, 4X4, Black & Agate Premium Cloth, SLT (I hate the pseudo leather package), ETH/DEE, LSD, 4:10's (running 19. 5's), Air Dam, Camper Special, Keyless, Fogs, Trailer Tow Mirrors (Boy I wish these were power -- still wavering here), Infinity, Steering wheel controls, Pwr Driver's seat (wish I could have gotten the dual, heated, pwr w/out leather), rear underseat storage, Tow, travel/convenience.

Still trying to get my order in. Talked to dealer Friday after seeing Mick2500's post, but didn't hear what I wanted to hear yet. Will have to see what Monday brings.

Mick2500- If you get more info on the 3. 54 with LSD please post it ASAP. This is a big deal with me. My Bronco is the first 4x4 I've had without a LSD - never again!

Regarding other options: HC mentioned after-market units. Note that most vendors do not have units available for rear-ends as heavy as Dana 80. The only limited slip (clutch type unit) for the Dana 80 are the Dana Trac Loc and Power Loc. One manufacturer makes a auto-locker unit (I've got model number at work, sorry) but no other non-Dana limited slip units are available. The ARB Air-Locker (a terrific unit) is not available for Dana 70 or Dana 80 axles.

The Dana Trac Loc is what was previously provided in the 3. 54 (small carrier) LSD option. This is no longer listed as an option by Dana for that axle. But you can still get a Dana Trac Loc in a box and install it into a 3. 54 Dana 80 axle. But do I really want to spend money on this when Dana won't support this combination as a factory option? Maybe.

The Dana Power Loc, which is a heavier-duty LSD, is used with the 4. 10 in the Dana 80. One option is to go to 3. 73 special "thin" ring and pinion setup in the rearend, plus 3. 73 in the front. This would be an after-delivery gear change. The rear 3. 73 for the larger carrier Dana 80 rear is a special order gear as normally you would change to the smaller carrier (carrier split) below 4. 10. This is the smallest gear available for the larger carrier. I am leaning towards doing this gear change-out from a factory ordered 4. 10 with the Power Loc LSD. It will be close to $700 in parts.

The after-market auto-locker is a good option, but make sure you understand the operational differences between a limited-slip and an auto-locker before you go this way. These are great units for off-road, but act a little weird on the pavement. You need to let-up on the gas around corners to unlock the differential, or they remain locked tight and can hop your wheels. Not really a problem in an empty truck, but what if you're loaded-up? Broken axles on pavement with lockers are rare but do happen.

Another option is get the 4. 10 with LSD, and add an auxilary overdrive unit. This would actually be the best option as you would have all the gear ratios you would ever want for both empty and towing. The problem is that this will cost you over $3,000 (Gear Vendors)!!

Yes the LSD is still available and the orders are going in like hotcakes!!
Light Driftwood is out, replaced by bright Silver Metalic. Plus that sun Fire orange or whatever that new color is on the Dakoata is now on the 2500's regards Pete

I calmed down enough to call DC back this morning (I had spoken to DC yesterday and they informed me I did NOT have a truck on order, THEY called my dealer and magically my dealer came up with yet another new VON #ad
) and learned that my current order (this is my 5th VON) is status BX (passed edit but not currently scheduled for build)
This is farther than any of my previous orders have gone. Maybe this is a good sign.

OK, changed order to 3. 54 axle with LSD. Order accepted. This same option had been rejected several times previously, and the latest printout I had specifically says that the option DSA (anti-spin) with 5. 9L engine requires option DMF (4. 10 ratio).

I think that the problem is with Dana. As I had posted before, axles on Dana computer selections (after-market sources) showed their limited slip differential only on 4. 10 and larger ratios (with 2-piece carrier design). Maybe Dana had a problem that is now fixed? I'll have more faith when I get an actual VIN number assigned and truck is in production. I become a true believer when I drive the truck and I see the expected RPM's versus MPH (with 265/75-16's 2000 RPM in 6th gear should give 63 MPH with 4. 10 gears, 73 MPH with 3. 54 gears).

I think you'll be happier with the 3:54's. My past experience tells me a 3:70 would be the best of both worlds for our trucks but a 3:54 is a nice compromise. Can't wait to test that ratio calculation myself. #ad

Mick2500 -- another note on gear ratios. I have the 19. 5's in the garage and ready to go on the new truck. Ran them on the 1996 I had with 3. 54s and liked them OK with the 12V (turned up), but I ordered the 4. 10s on the new one to compensate for the added diameter. I calculate the "effective" ratio to be ~3. 82 with the 4. 10s and the swap from 235s to 4. 10. If compared to the previously standard 215,s, the effective ratio is ~3. 67.

Now I better get an Abbott on order to fix that speedo when I mount the 19. 5s.
 
called DC this morning and truck is D status,,got the VIN and she said the ship date is today 7-13-00 !!!! 2001 Q-cab 4x4 slt brite silver yeeee!!!!! haaaaaaa!!!
