I have a 2001. 5 2500 QC 4x4 w/rear disc brakes (35,500 miles). Recently developed rear brake squeel whenever truck is rolling in gear at idle. Squeel disappears as soon as brakes are applied. Thought I had a caliper hanging up. Took it to my mechanic (friend who runs a Big truck service garage) and we checked things out. Calipers were fine, pads/rotors show very little wear, but found that the right inner pad has started to separate from the metal backing plate. As a result, the pad is curling away from the backing plate and lightly dragging on the rotor.

We called the dealer for replacement pads (thought I would replace them while truck was apart and then deal with the parts dept. about possibility of defective pad) and they quoted $105/set. The dealer said that they do not have any in stock and are being told from DC that they are back-ordered with no idea when replacements will be available. Seems to be a little suspect to me.

I dropped by the dealer and the service manager said since I am over 12,000 miles no warranty would be considered. My salesman suggested the arbitration process as a recourse because the pads appear to be defective.

I called local auto parts stores and they tell me that there are no aftermarket pads available yet for the rears since they just came out this year.

Thought I would post this as general information and also to see if anyone else has had this problem(and if so, what they did to remedy the situation).

The pad separation is a common problem and if it happend during normal braking operation [no excess heat buildup etc] they should be considered defective. If D/C doesn't have any pads available then they know they have a problem and don't want to sell a potentially bad product. No other aftermarket pads are available at this time but should be soon. You may have to lean on the dealer a little but they should be made good regardless of the mileage. ---Sam

Howdy, you know I was considering changing my rear brakes over to disc, however the rear brakes are actually holding up really well I think I'll keep them, if I were you I would go to a regular brake supply house and talk with them , good luck

So that's where that $#^&^% squeak is coming from. I don't hear it all the time but it's low speed in gear like you describe. Mine started at about 45,000 miles and it's been driving me nuts. Got plenty of pad left, won't do it with the wheels off the ground so I couldn't find it. Keep us posted.
