NEW TRUCK QUESTION

SOLD!!!!

I was wandering around a dealer lot today and saw my first truck with the rear disk brakes. (Just looking, mine is on order!) Anyway, I couldn't help but notice a glaring absence of any mention of the 4 wheel disks and ABS combination under the "standard features" list on the window sticker. As a matter of fact, all of the "older" trucks on the lot indicate front disks/rear drums and rear ABS as featured safety equipment. I find it interesting that there is nothing about brakes at all on the sticker. I suspect this is a deliberate tact. Dealers may have a hard time peddling existing stock of rear drums once the disks start showing up and an astute buyer actually reads the window label. No mention of disks or any brakes probably won't set off any alarms to the average buyer who buys based on the color and type of radio installed. (TDR members excepted!). I just found this kind of odd, since I believe (well hope anyway) that there will be a major improvement in braking technology implemented with the 2001. 5 models.

Shelby, reporting from Nampa, ID today, get to sleep in my own bed tomorrow night.

My dealers explanation for this and the lack of any mention of the 4 wheel disc on the 4adodge.com site is that most dealers still have lots of the disc/drum trucks on the their lots and they want to be able to move the old inventory first.

That's what the GM at my dealer told me anyhow.

Surveyor Shelby,
I have noticed this myself and had to call DC for the listing of installed parts to prove that I had ABS brakes. In NY State you get a break in your insurance premium for having ABS, not much of a break but every bit helps. Like you said there is no mention anywhere of the acronym ABS or 4-wheel disk brakes. Dave D, your dealer has a good point. If you drive a 4-wheel disk and then jump in a disk/drum unit, no contest. Dealers will have a harder time getting rid of the “drummers”. Love this new truck.

Anybody know if us guys 2001 drum brakes can swap to the disc setup? I would love the reaer discs, but I'm not trading in my 3 month old 2001 just to get them. I'm sure someone will try it sooner or later.

if those rear discs come from the same company that make the lovely steering boxes and the discs that disgraced the front of pre 2000 rams i'd have the dealer find me a "drummer" if they didn't have one . i wouldn't be to quick to "embrace " a new feature from DC , look how it takes to get things working corectly , if at all ... i say good luck to you DC guinea pigs #ad
