2001 boost pressures

I have researched past topics on this and there seems to be a big difference in boost pressure on stock 2001 trucks. I have an automatic that max's out at 15 psi in stock configuration; additionally the addition of a power edge ez and the turnbuckle recently doesn't produce any more than 15 psi. I have checked all my hoses and can't find any leaks. Does someone out there have any info what my boost should be in stock config. and w/ the ez and the turnbuckle trick? By the way a call to my dealers service dept. got the answer "2001's should have about 6 to 8 psi boost pressure and if I have 15 psi I have a bad lift pump which will definately cause high pressures" - I think this guy is an idiot - he has it backwards.

You should see 19-20PSI stock, and 26-29 with the turnbuckle on and the EZ connected.



You are right, the dealer is an idiot. NONE of what he said makes any sense at all.



If the boost piping seems to be intact take a look at your gauge and the plumbing to it. I would suspect the gauge as you should have seen at least a marginal increase with the EZ and turnbuckle on if the leak was in the engine plumbing.



What are your EGT's like? If you have an EZ connected and truly only have 15 PSI of boost they are going to be high, and get high in a hurry.



Let us know what the EGT's are and check your gauge setup. Hope this helps.

Had 18-19psi on my stock 2001... Put an EZ in with the supplied boost elbow and got 24-25psi WOT... Talked to Edge about this and they said this was pretty much what I should expect to see.



I think 15 psi is pretty low, and I'd have it checked. Don't know what type of boost gauge you have, but I'd make sure there is no leak at the hose barbs, off the engine and to the gauge. If it's just a push on connection, with rubber hose, I'd use small clamps or tye wraps to make sure they were tight under pressure... .

For my 2001. 5 auto w/ an HY35 turbo, my stock boost was 19 PSI. When I added my Edge EZ, I used the turnbuckle with a spring so it wouldn't completely disable the wasategate. This got me up to 25 PSI.

If you have added the turnbuckle without a spring, this would completely disable your wastegate and you should be seeing boosts up to 30 - 35 psi.

If you are seeing boosts of only 15 psi with the wastegate disabled, You have a Boost leak in your lines and you should have them checked !

Also your service department rep. is an idiot

Talk to either another dealer or someone who is a Cummins service technician.

Oh yeah, Take the turnbuckle and EZ off first .

19-20 for me, too. After I "altered" the exhaust, I see 20-21 now. Stock power on mine. I'd say 15 is low.

I had 21 in stock config prior to any bombing. Once I added a box (Power Edge) I could see 45 with the waste gate disabled (this is not good). So I think you either have a problem with your boost guage or a leak somewhere.

I would check the boost guage with a requlated air supply of some kind to verify the readings. Then I would check all the rubber boots that connetc the turbo to the intercooler to the intake horn. There was one member who found a small split in one of his lower boots. These are the ones that attach to the intercooler. The boot was rubbing against fender and had cut the hose. My suggestion would be to remove each rubber boot and inspect it, then reinstall it.

My guess it that you have a guage problem as you seem to have no complaints about low power or drivability issues.

I have an 01 and a half. Mine too gives about 19 to 21. Pulling a trailer weighing 8k gives the max boost at 21, with an EZ, no other bombing. G L :--)

The boost gauge is a very useful driving and diagnostic tool too. It tells you how hard your engine is working and how much cooled air is being forced into the intake manifold and is a reference number to help diagnose performance changes and mechanical changes you might do in your quest for more power. In fact it can tell you when something is changing in your engine’s performance; for instance if your truck creates 30 pounds boost today and only 25 pounds tomorrow and 20 pounds the next day, it may be an indication it’s time to change your fuel filter.

2000 Truck with DDII injectors, a boost module, and boost elbow, I see 30-32 PSI under load WOT > 2500 RPM, and it used to be 17-19 PSI stock prior to upgrades. 15 PSI is definitely way too low - you either have a faulty boost guage, a kinked boost line, or a boost leak somewhere. Maybe your wastegate is partially stuck-open? Maybe there's a hairline crack in your intercooler or a loost hose clamp somewhere?
