Hello,

This is my 1st post to the discussion group but I have been a member for almost a year now. Thanks in advance to anyone that responds. At any rate, I bought my 2001 CTD in September of 04 with around 33K on it. The truck has been used for light towing and light plowing the past couple of years and has been rock solid. Until a couple of days ago. I started to notice that when starting from a complete stop the truck will rev much higher than normal before it finally shifts, hard. When coming home from work today I came to a complete stop at the bottom of my very steep driveway and when I ascended the truck would barely get up the driveway!!! When I finally got to the top I checked the trans fluid it is full but has a burnt smell and is not the typical redish color. It has more of a brownish tint to it now. I am afraid my transmission is going. Anyone have any advice or experienced anything like this before? Thanks.

Jim

If the rpm are up and you are not going any where in a hurry, along with burnt fluid your transmission is toast. sure you did not want to hear that. My 98. 5 has 430,000kms on original transmission with no problems. fluid changed every 30,000 to 40,000 k . bands adjusted 3 times since new.

You are right. I sure didn't want to hear that :-( The weird thing though is that I went back out to the truck after a couple of hours after ripping all my hair out and letting the truck and myself cool down a little,I backed down the hill a bit, popped it is drive no problem getting up the hill. I have been reading some other posts and others are mentioning electrical problems and things of that nature. Could it be electrical? Also L1 and L2 seem to be fine. Thanks.

I think it would be worth scanning the truck & checking the governor pressure transducer. If the governor system is not working properly the transmisson may be in second gear when it should be in low. Don't give up on the transmission yet. Get it checked out.

Change the filter and fluid ASAP! You are not doing the slushbox any favors leaving that burned junk in there. . Also, fix your signature so we know all the details of your rig.

Drain the fluid and drop the pan. Take a digital pic and post here - let's see what it looks like. Regardless I agree with other posts - change that fluid and filter, see if there are any codes. Have solenoids checked for proper operation, get pressure readings. Any decent trans shop should be able to check the solenoids and pressure for you - cheaply too. Let us know what's up. Oh, my 99 that I bought w/75k, that was a mason contractor's truck, didn't need to be DTT'ed until 139k.

Good luck.

PROBLEM SOLVED - 2001 CTD 24V just turned 50K mi. Auto transmission problems

Well, I finally got the truck checked out at a local transmission shop and it was as most of you said. I ended up needing to have the governor pressure sensor and governor pressure solonoid replaced. The shop said it was stuck at a constant 16 psi. Never got out of 3rd gear. Fluid looked clear albiet a bit overheated. Also a filter and fluid change for around $500. Better than $2300 for a rebuild. Thanks again to all of you who posted replies.

Regards,

Jim
