Help. I was driving down highway truck on cruise control at 60.

Truck started surging and then blew some smoke out the rear end and quit running.

My tank showed 1/4 tank of fuel.

I added about 5 more gallons of fuel, bled fuel filter to remove air and truck just cranks but does not start. I have a good stream of fuel running out of line. I hear a motor or something in teh fuel filter working when I shut the truck off after trying to start it. do you think i need to keep bleeding the filter?

had AAA tow me home. so safe and sound but now trying to troubleshoot. I am a newbie with diesels so any help provided is appreciated.

what are you immediate recommendations?

I am going to autparts store to rent a code reader and will see what it is showing. .

what do you think may be the issue.

this truck is all stock no mods done yet. 2001 5. 9 auto 4x4 dodge 2500 diesel

Update: My check engine light is not on. I just bought a Actron code scanner $250 bucks and it is having issues linking with engine. are there are diagnostic ports in engine the scanner hooks into or is the one in the cab the only one?
engine turns but will not start, i re bled fuel filter purge valve and have good fuel.
any ideas of where to start?

Usually you're bled good after a few of the tap n let the fuel pump run, "after" getting the filter bowl clear. you can crack a coupla fuel lines and see if you are getting fuel up to the injectors... it'll eventually start on a couple of cylinders then clear up.....

A lot of just dies are the VP-44, dependent on mileage and adequate lift pump supply, you can get over 100K miles on these. If that's the cause, go with a known Bosch certified rebuilder that doesn't paint their pumps on rebuild. The paint ends up as a BIG micro-FOD problem. .
Cool thing is... . New Pump usually is like getting a new motor if it has some miles on it...

Most Cummins service centers have a hot wire box that will allow a VP-44 to start at an idle. I think if it will do that you can eliminate a fuel problem... .

OBTW, a lot of over the counter scanners DO NOT work "well" with the Cummins Dodge setups... The SMARTY units work well and allow code clearing even though there's a Key cycle sequence for that too... .

much snow, thanks for teh reply. my truck only has 87,000 miles.
I will pull a few lines and see if any fuel is being moved.
if teh vp44 is out then it will not allow the truck to start? is this the normal issue when a VP44 goes out?

AAAANNNNDDD, the fuel senderz in these can be real POS's, you may have actually run out of fuel... . one can only hope... Don't burn up the Starter now... .

I am also NOT receiving any trouble codes when I hook up the actron cp9185 scanner
it is having issues communicating with the engine. is therte a fuse I need to be checking for the obd scanner port? or would a fuse blow in this instance?

DO NOT PULL, just loosen at the injectors. . This is very high pressure through a well engineered setup... ... if they get wet or better or tries starting, snugg them back down and let it clear up... . Little or NO pedal action input should be used...

Fuel

when the truck quit on my there was surging and then a poof of white smoke and she stopped running

White smoke is lean, it coulda been outta fuel (not gas). ORRRRrrr, the VP-44 up'n died. Nice if it just ran outta fuel. So your lift pump is supplying fuel to the filter and injector pump?

You also have to do the crack the injector(s) line(s) thing while cranking. (do not over run the starter... )

I am hoping towards out of gas.
walk me through what I need to do to bleed fuel lines of air.

to confirm i only need to loosen the injector at the block to see if fuel is being pumped?

Just crack a couple of nuts on the head you can get at easily about a full turn. Then crank to get fuel to them (leaks around the line) then snug back down. Torque spec is on this site somewhere... .

SHES ALIVE!!!!!!! (insert very loud devious mad scientist laugh here) SHES STARTED UP AND RUNNING NOW!!!!thanks Muchsnow. Loosening the fuel lines (3 of them) helped. I turned key and she sputtered and stopped. so I turned key and she fired right back up again.
how do i check teh fuel sending unit to make sure i don't destroy my vp44?

My sending unit float ate itself at around 90K. I cant remember where it stuck. but it wouldn't allow my aux tank to see the truck at a quarter tank and refill the main. Try running out of fuel with 70 Gallonz in a bed tank that you can't get at... I now have a hotwire sheet permanently posted in the truck... I can see if the sending units are still available somewhere. . they tried to fix their lift pump problems with an in tank fuel pump/sending unit that superceded the original... . which do you have??

AAANNNDDD, do you have a fuel pressure guage or idiot lite (source: GENO's Garage ) to ensure feed pressure to the injection pump???
Because if you'd have seen Zero PSI at the onset of the problem, you'd have probably been ahead of the game (further ) here.....

Read UP, this is a really good website... .

Have a good one,

The sending unit attaches to the fuel module with a coupla screws or clips or something simple like that, and electrical connections and you're done... ...

The tank's not hard to drop... . plenty of help here if you search on it...

When My VP44 died the second time, it would start and run for a while and then just die. Might start again, might not start for a while. I believe it was a computer issue then. Have you checked any codes... If you cycle the ignition key on-off-on-off-on without starting the truck, you will get a readout in the odometer display of any codes. PCU then ECU. 1693 is a companion code that says to look at the other unit. When my fuel float died, it read fine until it was below 1/2 tank and the float would ride up the rod that it sat on and my guage would read 0. There is very good info on the web site for Blue Chips diesel.

Good Luck,

Dan
