Guys, I have a 2001 Dodge Cummins. Drove into Sedalia , Missoui today and Chevy Dealer had a Red 2001 Regular Cab Durmax/Allison 5 speed automatic, & I drove it about 10 miles. Smooth & Quiet with hardly any vibration. Allison trans is very low geared when taking off. Just punching it from stand still and not torqueing engine up she will burn tires for about one truck length. Faster than my stock Cummins & transmission felt better, like the way it de-celerated and gave some transmission braking also. As soon as I hit the road and got up speed I told the salesman how great it steered, I was impressed with steering and no wondering, it steered tight and percise, unlike my Dodge. Engine likes to rev up easily. Jumping on throttle at 60 mph it down shifts, but at 70 mph jumping on it it stayed locked in highest gear. Wish I could have driven it more, it was fun. Did not drive it faster than 85 mph, but it really wants to haul butt! It was a great experience!

I do know of another hotshot O/O who just bought one. So far no problems, But being a first year run I'd have doubts about buying one. I'll settle for for my 92 & 2000 Dodge. Just my $. 02 Mike

Also, know how the cummins starts, bump the key and doesn't take one revolution to start, Duramax takes about 3 revolutions of engine to start each time. Loved the allison ! It turned 1800 rpm @ 62 mph.

Before you get too tempted, check out the Diesel Page and see the posts on mileage. Early indications are fuel economy isn't that impressive.

One thing I know i don't like about the duramax is the fact that the motor is very light. I don't remember the wieght exactly but it was shocking to me. A diesel engine is no place to shave weight at all. I know the cummins wieghs in at a cool 1100lbs rwady to go and i am almost positive that the duramax is much lighter even though it is a larger displacement V-8. Just my . 02 i think i will go and drive one just for the heck of it here soon.

I'm not trying to split hairs here, but I thought the 5. 9 ISB in the Dodge trucks weighs in the 900-950lb. range???

Yes, new Chevy's do drive nice.
Key word: New.

By the time I wear out my 2001, we will have a track record on the Duramax (good or bad, don't know which yet), Chevy will be on their third round of improvements for this platform, the Dana axles will be a dim memory, and the Cummins may or may not still be available in the Dodge. Time will tell, no hard feelings here either way. My next truck will probably have to be smaller; just hope I have some diesel options to choose from. It is Dodge/Cummins that has brought diesel back from the death in the U. S. market; if Duramax is a winner then the buying public will still owe it to the Cummins for setting the standard.

Believe it or not, I'm really glad to hear it runs great. I finally saw one the other morning, but a danged S-10 Blazer got in front of me and I couldn't challenge him. In the end competition always benefits everyone.

S-10 was probably watch dog for duramax keeping an eye out for you danandme so you couldn,t get next to it. How big is Brady anyway? The chevy dealers had to warn all new duramax drivers about you.

Folks,
I may be missing the issue here, but does it really matter how much rubber you can leave behind the truck when you take off? I certainly don’t make decisions on purchasing a work/pleasure truck on how quickly I can replace the tires and how quickly I can go from 0 to 100. If I want to do that, I’ll buy a gas eater. I am more interested in dependability, how solid the truck is, how long it will last, how much it can tow/carry, etc. #ad

A friend of mine just purchased one of those Ford Excretions, and it has been in the shop more than he has driven it, it seems. Everything from re-programming his computer, to the dreaded knock problem. All he is able to say to me is “I get 20 MPG” and it weighs 8000 pounds! He also claims its faster/quicker than my “come-along”, and a better technology truck… All I can say is “yeah? You think so?”.

Who is missing the boat here? I don’t think it’s the Dodge owners… I think Ford has gathered a great deal of “lost souls”…

You may be right, Mule, I've dusted off enough PSD's they may have gotten the advanced warning #ad

N8LHG, the rubber burning is just fun. To be admitted, the vast majority of diesel owners don't burn rubber, or even "BOMB" for that matter. Guess it's just the fact that we have it all, turn key dependability and if we want, we can smoke the gas burners too #ad

Actually, I hope the GM Duramax/ Allison combo works out to be a great drivetrain.

Competition is good for all of us, keeps the front runners looking over their shoulders in fear of being second to someone else. And there would be another choice besides Ford, should DC do something dumb like drop Cummins.

The propensity of American automakers of doing dumb things to save a buck is high.

If it weren't for competition, it is doubtful Dodge would have the Cummins engine. They use it becuase they needed a silver bullet to save their hides in the pick up truck business. If the drivetrain roles of DC and Ford we're reversed, there might be few more of us now DC owners, owning Fords. I have nothing against DC, or Ford or GM. They all have their pluses and minuses.

I love my Dodge, and would not give it up easily.

Dodge had the Cummins engine in the late 80's, long before the diesel pickup market took off. I remember seeing it in hotshot rigs in about 86-87. Certainly the Cummins was not the silver bullet Dodge needed, but the improved styling and better public profile. About the only radical changes Dodge made when it took a larger chunk of the market were the body and the front suspension.

Its wonderful what better packaging and marketing will do.

I read an article that indicated that this engine has a cast iron block with aluminum heads. If this is true, I hope they've tested this engine for electrolysis and metal capatibilty over the long haul. I know its a V-8, but the straight six has proven to be the best over the long haul. I believe they went the right direction with the Allison transmission, but General Motors track record on diesel engines has not been very good.

sounds like a good engine with a great transmission but what is GM using for drive axles? I suspect the rear is a corporate 14 bolt but is the front of the 4x4's still independant? #ad
