I just changed the oil for the first time at approx 2000 miles. I had a h*** of a time getting the oil filter off. I tried two different types of wrench, both of which were the CORRECT size!!!! Finally, I did the backup thing and used the old screwdriver thru the case method. It makes a mess and it took four tries at it, but it finally came loose!! I don't know how many ft. lbs. of torque it took to break it loose but there is NO EXCUSE for putting one on that tight!!! Maybe someones idea of a joke?? Has anyone else had this problem??

The filter need to be tight to keep them from vibrating loses, but maybe not that tight.

Be xtra cautious when you let the can drop down on all those wires. My Dealer said there is going to be a TSB issued concerning do-it-yourselfers:1. Some folks are moving the AC line, under the can, next to the turbo intake and the AC connector is rubbing a hole thru the intake piping. 2. Some folks are letting th can hit the hot wire on the alternator and blowing a fuse. No more battery charge. He advised putting a towel under the can before letting it drop down--also don't try to ge a whole quart of oil in the new can. Fill it to the top once and let it drain down-and that's enuf oil.

beartrack,

When I did my oil filter change for the first time I had the same problem also, I almost broke my strap wrench. I finally got it off with the strap wrench connected to a 2 foot breaker bar. I definately think they put the filters on too tight. I was thinking I might mess up the threads on the engine trying to get the old filter off.

Changed my oil last week at 5200 miles and I had the opposite problem. Filter and drain plug were hardly tight at all.
I think I like the drain plug. Just loosen it 2 turns and it will drain the crankcase in about 5 minutes.

You should remove it all the way so any slug or bits of metal can wash out.

Strap wrench is the way to go. I use a simple rule for tightening the filter. On the Mopar filters (Yuk), if the "A" if facing you, turn it until the "C" is facing you. Otherwise I just make a mark about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way around after finger tight and tighten til it faces me. Hope that helps.

I like the oil filter pliers as sold by Griot's Garage (www.griotsgarage.com), Snap-On, Wal-Mart and others. These are nothing more than a large pair of specialty slip-joint pliers. There is NOTHING out there that can remove your oil filter faster. I install the new filter after priming with one quart of oil and lubricating the sealing gasket, HAND TIGHTENING 3/4 of 1 turn after the gasket contacts the mounting surface. I also apply a reference mark on the new filter that aligns with a mark I previously made on the mount to detect any possible loosening tendencies, while performing other routine maintenance or BOMBing operations.

NOTE: Be very careful how you reference the 3/4 turn after oil filter gasket contact with its mount as the Fleetguard label appears twice on the filter case, once right side up, the other inverted. If you use the label as a basis for tightening, this can cause improperly tightened filters if strict attention is not paid.
