Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2001 HO - Backfired and Died - Stranded HELP!

Well, I was cruising about 60mph and then attemped to accelerate. About 3 seconds later my truck made a backfire feeling and the engine shut down. The tach went to zero. All my dash lights were still on. It felt like I blew a front tire. I looked in my rearview and saw a small puff of white smoke. I thought the turbo exploded but it's still intact. All gauge readings were fine. Good fuel pressure from the LP. It pulled a 1693 code. I attempted to restart it after about 10 minutes. It cranked fine with no abnormal noises but it just wouldn't fire. Sounds like a new VP44 to me. What do you guys think?

Mine died kinda like what you said without the smoke. . My guess is the VP-44. Have the codes pulled with a scanner to be sure.

If it does turn out to be the VP44, my VP44 died a month ago and I got a rebuilt one from usdieselparts.com the price was 1,095. 00 for an 2001 H. O. model. I think they have plenty in stock. Good luck.

Sounds like the VP44. Mine cut out the same way, it turned out to be an internal electrical failure once I got the codes out of it.

I'm not sure of anything. When I turned it over, my FP pressure gauge went up to normal so I assume my LP is working.
