Does anyone know how much vacumn a 2001 HO's vacumn pump is supposed to draw ? I read on an earlier thread that it's about 30 pounds...

I also read that there is an exhaust on the vacumn pump, if it can't exhaust, than it can't produce vacumn...

My problem is that my brakes self apply when I slightly touch the steering wheel, they release as soon as I let the steering wheel go...

That would be OK, but, there are no straight roads in the mountains of Western North Carolina... LOL...

You 2001 has hydra boost brakes. You can start by changing your power steering fluid. If that don't work, I recommend a you purchase a pump from either PSC or AGR.

Yes, it does have Hydraboost brakes, and I changed the fluid once already, I even tried to clean the screen, but couldn't get a ball, spring or orifice to come out after I took the 18MM nut out... no fluid either...

Do you supposed it's that plugged up ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

My 2001 Service Manual says the output of the pump is between 8. 5 and 25 inches vacuum. (30 pounds (psi) of vacuum, relative to ambient atmospheric pressure, would be interesting to see on this planet. )

You know that 18mm bolt thing on the pump? (the thing you took off but couldn't get to the screen) take that bolt/plug thing back off, and then run a magnet in the bore and pull out the relief valve. you can at that point clean the screen and polish the sides of the valve (use atleast 1000 grit paper). if you have a hard time getting the paper, then just start with cleaning the screen, as that could be your whole problem.

Behind the valve there will be a spring, remove it with your magnet, stretch it a bit. Reassemble it, fill with new fluid and give it a shot :) .

power steering pump screen

I tried with a good magnet, couldn't get a drop out... What do you think about spraying brake cleaner in that hole and we see what happens ?

Ok then, stick a screw driver in the bore and poke at the valve quickly. The valve should bounce out.

Spraying brake cleaner in the bore won't do it. The screen is on the back side of the valve.

The vacuum pump exhaust the line that it is pulling a vacuum on into the engine crank case. The vacuum pump has an oil feed line to it to provide lube oil for the vanes. If you are not pulling a vacuum, it is possible that the o-ring seals have bit the dust. The pump can be rebuilt with new seals. if the coupler between the vacuum pump and the power steering unit is tore up or worn badly, it is possible to have bad power steering or problems with the power steering.

Both units can be removed assembled together from the engine and then seperated on a work bench, inspected, rebuilt and reinstalled in about 3 hours in your drive way. If you access to a lift then it should only take about 1 and half hours to do this.

It is not a tough system to work on. 3 bolts are all that hold it in along with 2 power steering lines, 1 vacuum line and 1 oil feel line. ;)

almost forgot - an over abundance of good lighting helps the eyes see the bolts that you have to remove

power steering pump screen

OK, I got the screen out along with the spring and the orifice that holds it in, but... NO BALL... just a 3 sided rock...

Is that supposed to be in there ?

The Dodge dealership was no help, want to sell me a new pump for $465. 00...

Local parts dealer is busting his chops trying to find me a relief rebuild kit or just a new pump...
