Hey everybody,

New to the site here, although I've been reading now for about 2 months. A friend and I "split" a subscription so I could post on here for the both of us. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer :D, so I'll probably do most of the posting for the both of us. Anyway, glad to be aboard this site, as I've already learned tons from just reading and not asking any questions. Well, on to my questions:

This summer, probably June or July, I'm going to have the chance to buy a 2001 q. cab, short box, auto, 4:10 gears (I think, not 100%), that is bone stock. It's my Grandfather's, and it's been babied. By the time he goes to sell, it'll have around 65-70K miles on it, with about 55k of those being easy road miles. He bought the pickup to pull his travel trailer, and now will never go back to a Chevy 350 (helped talk him into the CTD, and now he loves them). My question is this, WHEN :) I buy it, I plan on putting an Edge PE Comp box on it, and that'll probably be it till I have more $$$. I know I need gauges (that's a given), but what else for just the box? Is the valve body in the transmission a definite? Exhaust too, I suspect at least? Can you run just the box and no other performance upgrades, such as injectors?

Please help to lead me in a direction for more learning. I love reading about this stuff, and I know that by the time it happens, I'll have it all planned out. Oo. Oo. Oo. I can't wait!!! :D

Thanks all. Josh.

I would say if you go over a ez you better get vb and a tc. I have a vb and havent got a tc yet and mine slips like mad.

Upgrades

Josh, first: Welcome!!

Next, good luck with buying the truck. When you get it [I'll be positive for you], and install an Edge Comp, don't hook up the pump wire until you have upgraded the auto trans.

Running the Comp box without the pump wire is just like an Edge EZ, and shouldn't be too much for a stock transmission. This may vary from truck to truck.

Personally I'd find a truck with an upgraded trans and drive it. You may feel that the upgraded trans is a more worthwhile first mod than the box.

If you hook up the Edge Comp with the pump wire, without trans upgrades, I'm sure you will trash the stock trans very quickly.

A low restriction air filter is an easy mod, and getting rid of the muffler is also easy, but certainly not a requirement.

See my signature for my preferences.

Good Luck, Greg L

Thanks, and a couple more ???

Thanks for the input so far guys. It's been a bunch of help, and lead me to reading even more fun stuff :D.

Next questions:

Ok, I've figured out the vb is a given, as is probably a new tc (torque converter is what tc stands for, correct?). I won't be towing really heavy at all... probably the heaviest would be a steel snowmobile trailer with 4 sleds, weighing at the VERY most 10,000 lbs. The rest of the time, I'd just be wanting to, how do you say, "show off for people?", and I'm sure you guys know what I mean. What tc would be the best for this sort of a setup? If the stock transmission can handle the "jerking" into gear part, what % would I be looking at? 89%, 91%? I read all of the dieseltrans.com website, but it doesn't really give me an idea of what I'd be wanting for just an overall good setup for a daily driver that's gonna roast them from time to time.

Also, could you point me in the direction of somewhere to learn something about gauges and what setups work? I saw a picture of someone's off this site that had two digital readout gauges on the pillar that had fuel psi, egt, boost, and transmission temp, but can't find that post again. More than likely I won't go with cheap gauges, cause what's the point of having them if they don't work, right?

Thanks again for all your help guys!!!

Later, Josh. Oo. Oo. Oo. :D

SnowRacer-

I have the DTT 91% TC and valvebody and it is the best mod I have made to my truck. You get the same seat of the pants gain from it that you do from adding the EZ. As far as what you need I would call Bill K at DTT. He will tell you what he thinks and then custom build it for you. Just be certain that you plan all your mods out in first... I told him I was going to have 275 injectors and an Edge box... now look at me. If you want to spend the $$ on expensive digital guages look at SPA guages. They are sold in the Genos Gargage catalog that comes with the TDR mag and many other places. To see a pic, click the link in my sig.

Good advice, and gauges

Hi Josh, JR2's advice is good: Contact Bill K at DTT when you get the truck, you will love the truck with the DTT trans.

In the last or next to last TDR magazine, there was a very good article about gauges, If you don't have that issue, I'm sure you can order one still.

I went with Autometer 'Z' series gauges on the A pillar triple mount, I've had numerous comments about my 'factory gauges'. They do really look that close to the factory speedo and tach.

Keep reading everything you can on this site, you will soon form some ideas about what you want for your truck.

Enjoy, Greg L
