My boss used his truck to jumpstart another truck at work. The next time he started it up the engine acted like a couple injectors were bad. No engine check light came on. After cycling the key there were two codes set a p1693 and a p0500. We unhooked the batteries for a couple hours and cleared the p0500 but the p1693 was still there after startup. The motor idles and starts ok but smokes bad. I thought it was the cam position sensor so I swaped in the one from my truck. No difference. Also swapped the map sensor. No difference. Cracked all the injector lines one by one. Couldn't tell much difference between any one cylinder. Cracking the #2 injector seemed to reduce the smoke about halfway though. About the only other thing I can swap onto the truck is the ecm. Might try that tomorrow. The lift pump runs fine and there's fuel under pressure at the vp44 schrader valve.

I'm about out of ideas.

just a thought

You may want to remove the valve cover and make sure that all the valves are moving as they should. The symptoms that you are describing sounds almost like the exhaust valves on one or two cylinders are not closing fully. That would allow the unburned fuel to pass through, and cause a lot of smoke. Even more true if you say that breaking the line to one particular cylinder reduces the smoke.

Good luck.

Just my 2¢

Sounds like when he jump started the other vehicle he caused a short some where in his electrical system. This is causing the "computer controlled CTD" to send the wrong signals. He needs to take it to the dealer to have this problem tracked down.

p0500 is No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal

p1693 is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set in the companion Module, which could be the Cummins ECM.

If it happened right after jump starting another vehicle, its either electrical or an unrelated coincidental failure. I doubt it's a mechanical problem. Swapping the Cummins ECM would be a good test, as long as they're compatible.

I had same prob

I had same thing on my Y2K. It happened on a cold day when I didn't let the "wait to start" light go out before starting. I couldn't go more than 30mph, and smoke like heck wouldn't have it. I took it to the stealer, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong (it didn't act up with them--go figure!). So, I picked it up, and on the way home it did the same thing.

The only thing I could figure was bad fuel/gelled fuel.

I put in some additive and problem was gone. And I didn't go back to that fuel stop EVER again

Truck Blowing Diesel

I agree with Pit Bull, If you go back to where the problem started and what you did, you normaly get to the problem. The ECM, or timing sensor would be my guess. Harv

Swapped out the ecm and it still smokes. Checked the fuel and it looks good. Next step is to buy one of those vp44 testers I guess.

crack each one of the injector line independantly, and see if it changes the rough idle at all, if not, then it's probably that injector

I had the same problem, but not associated with the jump start, it turned out to be a bad injector

good luck
