Changed the oil the other week, now just noticed a drip, coming from vacuum pump want to take care of this. On my old 99 I bought the Goulds kit for $60 and ended up having a garage install it. For those who have done this repair is it worth getting the kit with the tools and DVD or for a 1/3 the cost get a cummins kit off Amazon, I'll be tackling this on my own

I bought the kit to repair mine, but when I removed the vacuum pump, I noticed the coupler for the power steering pump was significantly worn. This coupler cannot be easily removed. I replaced the seal with the Goulds kit and put everything back together.

I researched replacing the coupler (vacuum pump to power steering pump) and found that it required a special tool to do the job. Between the price of the new coupler and the special tool, I decided to buy a Dorman new vacuum pump for about $200.00. The new pump has been in service for almost 3 years and over 70,000 miles.

During this process I had persistent small oil leak at the two-bolt mounting flange where the vacuum pump fastened to the front engine cover. I resolved this by removing the supplied gasket and using a high temperature sealant only. I think that maybe the large diameter 2-bolt mount may bow under some conditions and the sealer compensated for that - just my own thoughts.

Also, if I recall correctly, with the Goulds kit you are installing a new seal on a used shaft - not the best situation.

On my 01 it was not a real problem though it took me a couple hours to do it taking my time replaced ps pump at same time. Only hard thing was one bolt was hard to get to other than that no real problems. I found the kit to be worthwhile. Came with everything you need to do the job and an extra seal. The dvd was worth watching as it really did help me as did the written instructions. Knew what I was getting into and what to watch for during the process.

Thank you for the replies. I ended up digging through my work bench and found the remnants of that kit lastnight I think I have the DVD still also inside, been over 5 yrs. I went ahead and ordered a cummins kit wih directions for 18.99 anyhow for insurance. Hopefully the coupler is ok. I won't be able to tear into it til this wknd being on the road. Planning to remove the intake manifold and plumbing to make it easier to remove the assembly. At any rate gonna devote some time to it and do it right. The truck has 215k if the power steering pump is ok I was just gonna put it back
