Truck died today and the only way it would start was with starting fluid. Would run fair, but had to keep rpm's up. When cranking, mechanical lift pump gauge bounces from 0 to 11. 11 is where it has been running at idle for the last few months. 11 is where it runs after it finally starts. New fuel filter 500 miles ago. My fuel gelled about a week ago, but its warm now. Sometime before this happened, on cool mornings sometimes you could hold accelerator down and no response for 100 yards up to 1/4 mile, then problem went away. no check engine light. These are original batteries. Can they be enough to crank but too weak for the ECM. What does the ECM require?Sensors??Any help would be appreciated.

First, don't use starter fluid. If the grids come on, you might be facing a good explosion in your intake system.

Once the engine has started it should be taking power from the alternator. That would provide enough voltage for the sensors. What does your volt meter indicate after cranking. If hanging way to the left, you may need batteries, but I don't think thats your problem.

It sounds like it could be your APPS not detecting throttle position.

Did the problem start right after you changed the fuel filter? Do you have seepage around the top of the filter? Is the drain valve closed completely? Is there any fuel leaks that would indicate a place where the fuel system could be sucking air?

Once fuel gels, and then thaws, the paraffin doesn't reincorporate into the fuel. You might want to replace the fuel filter. Also, find some anti-gel that specifically states that it will disolve and reincorporate the parrafin. Check out http://www.howeslube.com. This seems to be a good addiditve -- much better at dealing with gelled fuel than powerservice and stanadyne.

will try replacing filter. checked diesel connections and filter cap and drain. All OK. Batteries have exactly 12 volts sitting unhooked. will let sit awhile and reset throttle. Thanks

new batteries, new fuel filter, switched relays around, still no luck. funny there can be hundreds of posts people trowing rocks back and forth over a product disagreement but not much response in any 911 topics

At this point I would check the lift pump. Put a container under the fuel drain hose coming out of the filter. Turn the key to on. A good gush of fuel should shoot out the drain. If not, the lift pump is dead. If the lift pump is OK, you are going to have to take a look at the VP44.

The lift pump failing will cause a lack of throttle response like you described.

did a quick search on code reading and the only one I have is the common 1693. lift pump seems to be putting up about 10 lbs. If I can get it started without blowing off the intake with starting fluid, going to the dealer this morning. Thanks guys. Will let you know what the verdict is

Too late. Left it plugged in so they wouldn't go on. Really nice service tech showed me on his reader I had a bad map sensor(showing 12 lbs. all the time) and he unhooked trucks ecm and ran vpp44 in manual and still truck would not start. Said normal life is 75K to 150K normally, so looks like I'm in the market for a inj. pump. I dont know if the gelled fuel caused it, edge, or just end of life. A well spent 68 dollars to find my problems. About 1500 bucks is the best I can do so far. Might start another thread about cumminstuff products. Thanks very much to all that tried to help. Moderator, I guess my 911 emergency can be archived
