2001 XJ gas swap to 4bt cummins diesel

hi,

I have a 2001 Jeep XJ automatic that I want to swap the engine and drive train over to a diesel platform, preferrably a newer 4BT cummins.



I know its tricky to swap to a manual but isn't impossible.



What is all needed for this?

I know I will need a lift for sure, upgraded steering/suspension.

What else? Custom drive shaft? There was a video recently released on youtube of a super clean and sick 1999 XJ with a 4bt install.

search up "jeep xj 4bt" should be a red xj.

With all the flexing that is common on the xj,I would plan on a full cage,imho a gsk would be mandatory for the off road situations when rpm is needed.
It sounds like you are new to the powertrain swap arena so you may want to enlist the help of a local shop.

I've owned a few XJ's and I can't imagine how the 4BT swap would be financially viable, much less a performance advantage over the 4. 0L. My 94 XJ would get 21 on the highway, how many miles would you have to drive that 4BT before it paid for the swap? Given the premium for diesel you may never see a benefit... other than a nice rattle under the hood.

If you're really going to use your XJ off road, body flex will become a problem sooner or later. IMHO the unibody just isn't up to the task long term without some reinforcement. After 7 or so years of serious use (mostly in Moab) the unibody was complaining, the added weight of the 4BT won't help. Beef it up before you start twisting it.

Assuming your XJ has a 4. 0L, swapping it out for any other engine makes zero sense to me. The 4. 0 is a great engine that will easily go over 200k with minimal maintenance.
