Hey guys.

My 2002 HO 3500 has 22K on it and now with the 4" exhaust, EZ 65 HP upgrade and AFE Magnum intake and filter the clutch slips in 5th and 6th gear if I "jump on the throttle" as the boost approaches 15 lbs the rpm's jump up about 400 rpms while the spedo slowly catches up. I can't believe the mild BOMs are causing this. Any Ideas?:--) :--)

Some ETH/DEE clutches are better than others, I guess!! We tow a 13,500 lb 36' triple slide 5th wheel that puts us on the road at 21,180 GCW (21,500 GCWR). With 15,000 miles on the truck and basically the same mods you have (see signature), I've never slipped the clutch.

I pull a 38' tripple slide myself at 14klbs. The problem is the truck does this empty. You refer to the ETH/DEE clutches, are they the stock models? I don't want to ruin the flywheel or anything. Should I upgrade the clutch to a SBC or have the dealer replace it with a new stock unit under warranty? Is this common?

John

You have an ETH (Cummins HO) / DEE (New Venture NV5600 6-speed transmission). ETH/DEE is the order code for this engine and transmission.

If I were replacing my clutch, I'd talk to Peter at South Bend Clutch and probably wind up with a Con O-FE. I doubt you'd get a dealer to replace a clutch under warranty - it's a wear item like brake lining, etc. Who knows, though - you might!

Thanks for the Input. I guess I will get to see how good the 36 month/36K mile bumper to bumper warranty really is. If they don't cover it I am going back to an automatic since I can get the HO in an auto now. At least everything is covered in them.

Our trucks are similar, only I have DD2s as well:eek:

Mine is holding well, even WOT uphill in 6th pulling 5K.

I couldn't believe it either. From the kick I get, I am positive that I didn't accidentally get DD1s or 275-- good smoke too.

Seems there's a lot of variance as to how much the stock clutch holds. I try to help mine out by always starting out in 1st (as per TDR article by Peter of SBC).

So far, so good-- but I am saving for a Con-FEW

Clutch slippage

Thanks Hohn for your input.

I am getting ready to do the "dealer thing" and see if they are willing to fix it. If not, i will be doing the SBC CON FEW sooner than later.

JCotte,

Unless you have a very good dealer they will not do anything under warranty. The clutch, like the brakes are only covered to 12K. I went with a Con FE almost two years ago and it is holding all that I can throw at it. FWIT the Con FE is a little more grabby then the OFE.

It really seems like some of the clutches hold great and some don't hold at all. My stock clutch is still going at almost one week with the injectors, and yes, they are definetly 100 hp+ although I hope to dyno soon to confirm.

It's funny, I thought that hooking up the pump wire would kill it, then I thought the new comp (old one was bad) would do it. I thought there is no way it will hold the comp on 5x5 with these showerheads, I even abused it a little just to see if I can find the upper limit, no luck. I just hope I don't spend my clutch money before it goes out:D .

Wanna Kill it fast??

Go to the track and try a third gear launch at 2000 rpm that should do it! Did mine in trying that! I pulled out the POS K&N and put in my bhaf out of my 96, man the thing breaths now picked up 6 tenth's in the 1/4.

Don't do it!! $1000 for a super clutch, versus $4k to rebuild that auto, and you WILL have to do it if you start working that truck like it was meant to be worked.

From the mouth of the Dodge rep for Cummins at the Denver Cummins open house.

Update and dealers

Thanks for the update Sticks. I certainly was not aware of the limited life of the 48RE. A quick update on the dealer issue. The first dealer A LARGE DEALERSHIP of course told me it was a wear item and when I explained to him I felt it was more a clamping issue than an issue of friction material he told me there was no way to prove it but would be glad to sell me a new clutch. Second Dealer a Smaller MORE HOMETOWN TYPE DEALER told me he would order the clutch and PP set and unless the friction material was wiped out on the disc (Which I doubt because the Bell Housing does not have disc dust in it) he would cover it no problem. :D I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.
