Need some help. I am thinking it's a failed lift pump followed by a shot VP-44. The following codes. 1693, companion code.

0121, Throttle/Petal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem

P0216 Injection Timing Control Circuit Malfunction

Symptoms; Truck runs fine down the road, and with out notice goes to an idel. Shut truck off for some time, works for a bit, then back to an idel.

If any of you have had this, please feel free to tell me about it, or if you have any ideas, I will gladly take those too.

ECM can give you dead pedal besides TPS/Apps. From the codes it looks like an eletronic problem pointing more to the ECM than the TPS/Apps. There are electronics in the Vp44 so that could be the problem.

I would pull the connector on the ECM and VP44 and spray down with contact cleaner see if that helps.

Don't recall which position senso(Throttle Position or Accerlator pedal postion) the 2002 has but check out the connector and wiring also.

You could also try cleaning battery post and cable(connectors)

Sean3073,

You have one more code than I had; the P0121. On New Year's Eve at ~107,800 miles my truck experienced the P1693 and P0216 codes - with the dead pedal syndrome when the automatic upshifted to second or third gear. Unfortunately it was the VP44. Lift pump had been changed as preventative maintenance over a year ago because it tested weak under full throttle.

Verify fuel pressure, fix if needed, clear codes and test again.

APPS - clean and check connections, clear codes, check for operation. I have found that the APPS gets a dead spot in the RPM band that the truck runs the most. Engine at operating temp, slowly depress the throttle up to your most frequent RPM band and hold for several seconds at 100rpm increments to see if you get a free repeater (drops to idle, engine RPM becomes erratic). NOTE - under load the pedal will be depressed farther than no load, so overshoot by 500rpm or so.

Having a scanner that shows APPS values makes this much easier.

Get the trouble shooting tree for the APPS code. The 0216 90% of the time is low fuel pressure, not necessarily a death code for the VP.

gentilemen, Thank you for the assistance. I will take all of your advice and more when and if people post it. Thank you all again, and thank you for the support.

I will keep you all posted and watch this thread.

Sorry but a p0216 is the Dreaded INJECTION PUMP TIMING FAILURE!! I'll bet the vp is gone. But you can test all the other stuff first. I have yet to see a truck come in with a 216 that didn't need a pump! Sorry!

I have. Not many, but enough for me to fix everything else first then verify and not some 3-5 minuet test. More like 1/2 to 45 min of engine operation. I'd feel awful hitting a person with and additional $1500 in parts and labor for no reason.
