Just bought a new 3500 4x4 srw short box, 6 speed H. O. Cummins. I'm very pleased overall, however the transmission is noisy and rattles at low rpm in all gears. There seems to be lash noise when it's (transmission) unloaded as in topping a hill. Is this characteristic of the speed?

Welcome aboard, and nice choice. My transmission is pretty darn quiet, the whine if you will is hardly discernable and no rattling. Perhaps you could take a spin in one of the dealers other 6-speeds to get a better handle on whats normal.

Mine does this too as well as others at the dealer. It will do it if idling up a grade in 1st as well as reverse. I wouldn't worry about it, they may all have done it you can just hear it better on the 03s.

The noise you hear is very common and not considered a problem. If you do a search you'll find this has been talked about at length and you'll also find that just about everybody's does the same thing.

Enjoy the ride, it just keeps getting better as the miles rack up.

Mine only makes a noise in nuetral with the clutch out, but not every time. When it does make the noise, I can push the clutch in and move the shifter in and out of gear, then let the clutch pedal out the noise goes away. Dealer said it was a normal thing on the NV-5600's. I now have 8,800 miles.

I guess krabman and I are lucky. I recently met several guys who's trucks had the same trans. noise. One even said that his dealer got him a new one immediatley and the new one (directly from NV) had the same noise also. They seemed to have gotten used to it, but it was pretty annoying to me.

My 6-speed is very quiet under all circumstances, except when I slow down to where the engine is only turning 1100rpm or slower in gear (at which point I should have disengaged the clutch anyway). It makes a buzzy sound but not bad at all. It's one I've heard many times on manual trannys on 6-cylinder gassers when you lug 'em down too low.
