2003 Overdrive Problems

Well I have 4000 miles on my truck and today on my way to town it did not want to go into overdrive, I did remember something about a temp sensor that won't allow OD until the transmission is up to temp, so I blew it off for a few minutes.

Meanwhile 15 minutes went by a still no over drive. I did stop by the dealer last week to check on the cooler line recall, my trucks vin# was not on their hit list.

I am a little concerned, I dont want to hurt this transmission, if I can help it. I did check the fluid level and it is fine, mabey a little high.

I did finally get it to go into overdrive but I was doing 75 mph, and over 3200 rpms, I cancelled OD and tried to re-engage but not dice.

Well if anyone has a clue, please post. If not I will pull my cooler line tomorrow, and inspect the check valve. I really hope it is some thing simple, and that I am not just another statistic for the book. :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{

bipit, Don't know if your trans is the same (if electronic senors are the same/or same location).

trans tmp = middle/side of trans.

crank speed sensor,= front/left bottom side inserts into engine block (24 valves).

trans speed sensor, back/left side of trans

Throttle postion sensor ? Don't know mite have of relocated or new electronic name/sensor.

Govenor and its component ??? not sure.

If it goes in at that high of speed/rpm computer mite need to be reprogrammed.

mechanical would be the overdrive clutch.

How about warranty coverage?

bipit,Did you get a check engine light? There has been an issue with moisture in the PCM connector causing a number of different concerns,no overdrive being one of them. With the key off, remove all three connectors to the PCM, spray contact cleaner (plastic safe type)into both sides,PCM and connector, blow dry,add silicone dielectric compound. If any serious corrosion has formed(green)take it in to the dealer. Hope this helps.

Hey fellas,

Thanks for all your input, I will check the pcm, but It seems like a lack of fluid problem.

Sometimes it will show low when the transmission is functioning properly, and when is not it will show hi on the dipstick.

This kinda makes me think that the check valve in the cooling line is sticking an not allowing the fluid to circulate, causing the hi indication, because the majority of the fluid is still in the pan.

Either way it is a pain, now I will go and see if I can reconize the pcm, this truck is a little different than my 2000, I hope I can find it and there is evidence of moisture.

I will let you all know what is figured out, if nothing for more data on our trucks. :( :(

Without a scan tool it will probably be difficult to diagnose yourself. With the scan tool you can check all the electrical and hydraulic circuits in a couple of minutes. The overdrive solenoid is controlled by the PCM. You could put a digital volt meter on the 3-4 (overdrive clutch) shift solenoid wire. It is the brown wire in the round connector at the trans, or on the PCM C-2 connector (white connector in the middle) pin 21. The PCM duty cycles the ground side of the solenoid to activate overdrive. Inasmuch as you will have to probe wires to check this way, as long as it is in warranty I would take it to the dealer it it were me. If you live near salt, you really don't want to be poking around the wires. Best left to the scan tool.

Good luck.

overdrive

I was at local dealer when one was brought in the govenor had stuck and burned up transmission. Transmission wouldn't shift into O/D customer drove 300 miles like that had less than 2k on truck when he toasted trans.

Well,

As it turns out, my truck was involved in the TSB for the anti-drainback valve in the trans cooler line. They replaced the valve, and now the problem seems to be gone.

Thanks to everyone who gave input, I appreciate the help.

Clay:) :) :)
