I saw this in the July Popular Mechanics, lets hope its not to be. #ad

"Dodge sells about one in five Ram pickup trucks with diesel engines, specifically a Cummins 5. 9-liter turbocharged six cylinder. But that will change when the 2003 model Ram is introduced in 2002. Then Dodge Rams will use a six-cylinder turbocharged diesel built by Mercedes-Benz in Germany. The Mercedes engine is expected to be as large as 6. 4 liters and will develop 200-plus horsepower. This will be a substantial cost saver for DiamlerChrysler. "

WOW- 200 plus horsepower, if this happens I'll have to trade mine immediatly to get the Benz motor. Ya right #ad

2001 black dually,4x4, 6 speed H. O. ,loaded up. Jacobs E brake, lighted running boards, toolbox, solor visor, mag hytec cover, rhino lined, diamond tread rail protectors, mud flaps with genos chrome plates, megs exhaust tip, VDO vision series pillar mounted pyro & boost gauges (to be changed), rerouted blowby bottle, torklift class 5 double tube extension hitch and frame mount camper anchors... Its not a hobby anymore, its an addiction!

MB is gonna be in there. MB is NOT going to be in there. This issue has been back and forth like a ping pong ball. I suspect they'll faze in the MB, first as an option besides the Cummins, and eventually they'll faze out the Cummins all together. I hope mine lasts forever #ad
I'll put a million miles on it, then it'll be a collector's item #ad

If I had to guess, its possible that DC doesn't last as that single corporate entity that long. The American and German engineering methods don't mix well. Apparently the Americans will find a solution, mull it over for a few days, and reapproach it, possibly changing it. Meanwhile the Germans lok at this and wonder why the solution is being changed. Seems once they nail a problem, they are done, and have moved on. Also, when diesel topic was announced by Jergen Schremp in March, Chrysler CEO and Cummins CEO both denied that Cummins was out.

The rumors that I have heard; take em for what they are worth.

Like many of you, I chose the Dodge almost solely to get the Cummins engine (with a thumbs up to the NVG trans and Dana Axles). The Dodge lacks a number of features the others have (such as locking tailgate and better A/C controls, to name a couple). But I weighed engine/drivetrain considerations far above those other items in importance. If all that changes (no Cummins, no Dana, etc), then I'll be taking hard second looks at Ford and Chevy the next time I go shopping. Since my new truck is only 1 month old, I have time for DC to sort this out before I have to make any decisions - I just hope they make the RIGHT decisions, or I'll go elsewhere.

So, this brings to the heart of the Ram truck sales issue of one in five trucks being Diesel equipped.

How many of us bought the Cummins engine which just happened to be packaged in a Ram chassis??

I'm guilty as charged.

I would probably be guilty too, but now I think Dodge over all makes a better built,more luxurious truck than GM and Ford, Fords are so plain. I love my Cummins, as well as the Dodge its self, I know now that I made a good decision.

2001 24 Valve Cummins, Black, Agate Leather, Every Option Available, Straight Pipe, Auto, QC, SWB, 33x12. 50 BFG Mudders on 16. 5x9. 75 Weld Super Single II's, Coming Soon: 275 Injectors, VA CPC, possibly HX 40.

Man, what can be better than a CUMMINS!

I know the top placed person in development (i nwill not sya whether it is Dodge or Cummins), and as I reported before IT WILL NOT BE MB, nor even another Cummins. It will be our 5. 9L with the Bosch common rail system that is now in the Durmax. The engine is quiet (This person has heard it many times and says that it is like the Durmax) and the pollution control is proving to be a problem at the moment (thus I was told to wait 6 months after its introduction to allow time to get all the bugs out). The EPA mandated that the 2004 engine be brought online by no later than Oct. of 2002 (as part of Cummins fine for over polluting). So, Dodge brings the new 5. 9 in on Sept. of 2003. I also just reported that the Allison is in fact being tested at this very moment. My source (and they are at the very top) said that they had no word from the pencil pushers yet on whether they will adopt the Allison 1000. This person is in engine development and has no input into the transmission side of things. This person would only tell me that the 2003 5. 9 Cummins is already mated to the Allison in several test vechicles in order to evaluate the Allison. Anyway, I hope this ends the speculation on the MB diesel (not that they make a bad diesel, to the contrary, they make excellant diesels).
Cheers
Bill

Not that I'll ever have to replace my Ram, but if I did I would get the MB straight ^ rather than any duramax or PSD those things are a nightmare to work on you can't even see the turbo, I like simple reliable and easy to work on engines. I love the cummins and i think if DC is dumb enough to drop cummins someone else will pick them up, I'd buy a super dooty with B5. 9. I would also buy a super duty psd IF the cackle and turbo problems were fixed... I don't understand the ford guys loyalty to ford/navistar they are STILL building trucks with cackle and turbo bolt problems!!! weak attempts at best with the #8 injectors, a band aid fix if you ask me

The word I hear from the Fleet Manager where I bought my truck is that DC will be producing a 4500 and 5500 truck. The MB engine will be optional in these trucks. While the Cummins will remain an option as well. Also he says he has seen pictures of the new body style and says the concept picture floating around is not even close. He would not elaborate any further.

Ameradian, what is this fine levied against Cummins by the EPA that you're talking about? Never heard about that before. Is this something recent or a while ago? Did it have anything to do with the B-series specifically or what?

Vaughn

After reading the July Popular Mechanics, I emailed PM questioning their story. This is their reply. "We have well-placed sources within the DaimlerChrysler organization that tell us
that this will, in fact, be the case. Sorry. We love that Cummins, too".

Guess time will tell...

I let this thread run it's coarse before I replied. I have read PM magazine for years(I am 39 years of age) and I have allways 'WOWED' at their articals until they wrote an article about something I knew something about. I work for a company that does work for the military.

They wrote an article about a futuristic weapon that would be available in five years! It is now ten years later and this weapon is still in the think tank!!

I also know that when a big corporation, or a big government organization, or even a political organization comes up with an idea, they 'LEAK' it out to the public to get a good public opinion.

I think this is what is going on here. (Can you think of a better magazine to do it with?) They're a lot of people watching here, So speak your mind, let them know what you think.

Hey!! I love my truck!!!

I fave a foreign exchange student from Germany coming to stay for 5 months. Her father works for DC. I will see if she has any info to whats going on.

Why would anyone want to quiet down the Cummins engine? Just yesterday I was at the gas station (in my wife's Neon) and a PSD pulled in to fuel up. You could tell it was a diesel but you also knew right away that it was NOT a Cummins. I wouldn't trade that REAL diesel sound for anything. I know the common-rail fuel injection is good technology, but I'm keeping my '96 forever.

radixr,

On the subject of that "Cummins Sound", I'm with you. I would be SERIOUSLY disappointed if my ISB sounded any other way. One of my favorite things to do is listen to that 5. 9 hum. I don't think I would want it any louder, but definately not quieter. And certainly not like those V8 diesels. Anyone listening out there?

Vaughn the fines were for all Diesel manufactures in the USA but especialy the big three Cat,Cummins and Detroit.
The EPA new about the system for years because it was arranged with the diesel manufactures they were just covering there back side.
The Diesel engines were susposed to burn cleaner. They do in the city, poor fuel economy but cleaner exhaust. (Semi's and I believe Med duty trucks) The catch 22, they had to two programs in the computer. The second one was acctivated when the truck was put in Cruise control, it forgot about exhaust standards and went for power and fuel economy. This second program is what they were fined for even though the EPA new of it for years. OverDrive magizines had a few articles about this subject.

Vaughn, all the big boys got tagged for exceeding the stated limits on their respective engines. Part of Cummins settlement with the EPA was the moving forward with the 2004 engine to no later than Oct. of 2002. I just hope that it is mated to the Allison :>)
Cheers

<font color=blue>On October 22, 1998, the Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency announced an $83. 4 million total penalty against diesel manufacturers, the largest civil penalty ever for violation of environmental law. Under this settlement, seven major manufacturers of diesel engines will spend more than one billion dollars to resolve claims that they installed computer devices in heavy duty diesel engines which resulted in illegal amounts of air pollution emissions. This settlement will prevent 75 million tons of harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions nationwide by the year 2025. The companies involved are Caterpillar, Inc. , Cummins Engine Company, Detroit Diesel Corporation, Mack Trucks, Inc. , Navistar International Transportation Corporation, Renault Vehicules Industriels, s. a. , and Volvo Truck Corporation.

Alleged Violations: The seven companies sold 1. 3 million heavy duty diesel engines containing illegal "defeat devices," which allow an engine to pass the EPA emissions test, but then turn off emission controls during highway driving. As a result, these engines emit up to three times the current level for NOx a harmful air pollutant.

Public Health and Environmental Effects: NOx creates smog and soot, and contributes to acid rain and other forms of air pollution. Adverse health effects caused by NOx include premature mortalities, reduced lung function, and aggravated existing respiratory problems such as bronchitis and asthma. Environmental impacts include the deterioration of coastal waters and estuaries (such as the Chesapeake Bay), global warming and stratospheric ozone depletion. These heavy duty diesel engines emitted 1. 3 million tons of excess NOx in 1998 alone, equivalent to the NOx emissions from an additional 65 million cars being on the road, and representing 6% of total NOx emissions across the nation.

Total Settlement:

$83. 4 million in civil penalties, the largest civil penalty ever for an environmental violation;

At least $850 million to produce significantly cleaner engines, including engines that have their emissions cut in half by January, 1999 and that by October 1, 2002 will have emissions reduced by 80% compared to current levels 15 months before those standards are scheduled to take effect;

$109. 5 million for additional environmental projects like development of new emission-control technologies;

Violations and Settlements for Individual Companies:

Caterpillar Inc. produced 320,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1988. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 2. 1 million tons. The company will pay a civil penalty of $25 million, and will conduct environmental projects costing $35 million;

Cummins Engine Company produced 400,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1991. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 3. 6 million tons. The company will pay a civil penalty of $25 million, and will conduct environmental projects costing $35 million;

Detroit Diesel Corporation produced 430,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1988. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 9. 0 million tons of NOx. The company will pay a civil penalty of $12. 5 million, and will conduct environmental projects costing $12 million;

Mack Trucks, Inc. and its business partner, Renault Vehicules Industriels, s. a. , produced 90,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1990. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 860,000 tons. The company will pay a civil penalty of $13 million, and will conduct environmental projects costing $18 million;

Navistar International Transportation Company produced 78,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1994. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 40,000 tons. The company will pay a civil penalty of $2. 9 million;

Volvo Truck Corporation produced 10,000 engines containing defeat devices since 1994. These engines resulted in excess NOx emissions of 148,000 tons. The company will pay a civil penalty of $5 million, and will conduct environmental projects costing $9 million.

This is where I got this information : Fines for CAT, Cummins, Detroit, Navistar, Mack, and Volvo
