Went to start my truck this morning and it wouldn't fire. Cranked great but that's it. IT was 18 degrees and not plugged in. It was 8 degrees 2 days ago and started fine without being plugged in. I can hear the pump cycle but that's all. Cycled the glow plugs a few times but just no fire. Any ideas?

I had this problem a year ago. I ended up changing injectors and crossover tubes. There was enough leakage that rail pressure would not get high enough for the ECM to allow the injectors to fire. There are a lot of threads on this topic that cover a lot of possibilities. By the way you do not have glow plugs.

Same problem happened on my 03 two weeks ago, first hard starting, then on cold mornings no starting. Checked lift pump was fine, dealer ended up changing out all six injectors under the Cummins engine warranty. Runs perfect now.

Andres,

I don't ahve any codes. I've been plugging it in and no problems now. I haven't noticed it on starting but when the truck kicks up to high idle it seems like there is a slight miss. Also it seems to be on high idle most of the time. I will be on my route and stop after a drive, 10-70 miles, (vehicle fully warmed up) and it will only idle at 1000 rpms. Even after stepping on the brake it won't idle down. Any idea on this?

I am ordering a CD manual from Geno's to educate myself more on how the system is suposed to work.

NO START AGAIN TODAY. Went to leave for work and cranked like crazy again. Forgot to plug it in and same problem. Can you check rail pressure with the Bully Dog units?

Bump.

Kinda having a similar issue. Sometimes my '03 won't start. If I let shut off all power for a few minutes, then turn the key on and lel the fass run for 20 sec it will start then.

Mine seems to do it only after shutting down and waiting a little while.

Also, seems to be cranking longer all the time.

ONly codes are teh crank pos sensor (I have an old tst) and an exhaust brake code (has been sticking on occasionally).

Thinking about throwing crank / cam sensors, FCA, and maybe a rail pressure sensor. I did recently fix a leak on the rail. I removed cleaned and tightened the pressure relief vavle. No more fuel mist on the rail. Although I did see fuel at the top of the valve, I thought it wasn't supposed to have fuel on top of it unless it was relieving or leakinig?

THANKS C.

I will be taking it into the shop on Friday. I am still not getting any codes. Was surging and losing power yesterday for a few minutes, and at times when I stepped on it to go it wouldn't. Other times it was normal. Don't think it was the fuel but who knows i've been hearing horror stories from my customers about the fuel problems this winter.

I didn't think about the crank sensor but I had a car with a bad crank sensor and it wouldn't start unless ti was plugged in either. Something to check.

My buddy had the exact same problem and ended up getting 6 new injectors. It would not start with the temp in the teens and not plugged in. As far as I know there are only two products one the market that read rail pressure, quadzilla and DiPricol. The DiPricol will not read during cranking, only while running. If you do end up getting injectors put in, I would HIGHLY recommend another fuel filter down to 2 micron. The factory one is 10 micron, you can get a 7 micron, but at 10-24,000 psi rail pressure any debris ruins injectors. I have a 2 micon CAT filter between my factory filter and CP3, so far no problems at 88,000 miles.

Using a small bit of ether is a good trick to check if its an injector issue, I did that on my buddys truck and it started on ether every time.

I had the same problem and changed the Lift Pump. Did not fix the issue. Just cranked. I checked all sensors with no change in problem. Finally I used some starting fluid and sprayed into the intake tube for aboute 10 to 15 seconds. It started after about 5 seconds of cranking. Ran rough for about 5 minutes. I only had about 1/8 tank of fuel in in and went immediatly and bought some diesel injector cleaner, poured it in and filled the tank with fresh fuel.

No problems since then. I think I had bad fuel. Try the starting fluid trick first and verify it will start or not.
