Looking to possibly upgrade from my current 93 CTD. Test drove a used 2003 HO 6 speed and was very impressed with the vehicle. 84k miles, buit looks like hwy use with little/ no towing.

Only area that concerned me some was that there seemed to be a "clatter"/ "rattle" noise that came from the transmission when starting out in 1st or 2nd gear. If I am idling in 1st or 2nd there is no rattle until i accellerate off idle. The noise seems to be more prevalent when starting in 2nd gear and disappears as soon as the motor moves up in the revs.

Basically the clatter (almost sounds like engine lugging. . ) starts right as the clutch is fully engaged and is gone within a couple of seconds of accelleration. There is no noise at idle in neutral with the clutch in or out, so I dont think this is a clutch issue???

I saw some posts on 6sp rattles, but I'm not sure if this one is the same. .

ANyone think this is a problem and I should pass on the truck???

I have the identical situation that has happened on my truck since day 1 and now I have 35,000 miles but it bugged the crap out of me for a long time and the dealer could never hear it go figure, but I dont know if it is normal or a good noise I have just learned to live with it. I really am glad to know that there is someone else with the same noise, hopefully we can get it figured out or learn that this is just the nature of the bad *** nv-5600.

My 05 w/5600 did this since day one . The other 5600 equipped trucks i test drove all done the same. Dont worry its normal .

Good luck with the purchase

It's normal, it's a truck transmision. You ought to hear my 13 speed roadranger rattle in my 2000 International behind the N14 460 cummins.

Yep,

My other truck is a 1975 Chevy K-10 with SM 465 4spd and rattles loud when going slow especially when you are on and off the gas while idling in gear.

As said, it is normal... one thing to check is that the clutch doesn't "rattle" when you are sitting idling in nuetral... there is a TSB about this and the fix is a clutch. Even though it was an 03 thing, my 04. 5 had it... it just sounds like someone rattling a marble in a can under the truck that goes away when you depress the clutch.

steved

The noise you're referring to here is in-gear rattle, which is a consequence of the engine torsionals being imparted to the transmission, which lights off the free gear sets in the transmission and causes "gear rattle. " Only fix for this is a DMF like that on 05. 5 and up trucks.
