2004 Excessive Oil Consumption???

Hello guys, looking for to do some diagnosing for a buddy. Hopefully you can help.

This truck is an '04 6 speed... . and using about a gallon or so between oil changes. Never had any black boxes etc. Drove from NC to WV yesterday and used almost 2 gallons of oil. What are we looking at/for?

besides a massive oil leak you should see oil everywhere on 1 side or the other of the motor or the under side coated with oil ?

How many miles? What kind of maintenance? Does the truck have a K&N air filter?

Does it have the correct viscosity oil? Hopefully not a gasoline engine type oil. Have seen were the quicky oil change places put the wrong oil in them

more details like colr of smoke if any blow by out of crankcase vent,... .
