I am new to the diesel world and I understand these motors tend to leak. I did my oil change the other day and noticed some oil on the bottom bell housing of the transmission and the trany pan. It was dark in color so I figured it was not the trany fluid. I did notice that there is a . 5" house coming down on the drivers side that I think is a blow off house. ?. Can that be contributing to the added oil?

FYI... . 2004 Quad Cab, AT, Shift Kit, TST Box never higher than #3 setting, Stock injectors, air cleaner.

Thanks

TKarnas,

The hose is he breather hose and is probably the source of the residue in the trans. The Cummins engines are real tight and any fluid leakage should be checked and resolved. I fitted a catch bottle to my breather hose just to keep things clean.

It’s not the rear main seal

It’s not the rear main seal, the . 5” crank case vent line dribbles and looks just like the seal may be leaking. Put a bottle over the end to catch the blood.

The engine doesn’t leak unless something is bad wrong

Ok thanks... I ll keep a eye on it and see if I cant put something on the hose. do you all drive the truck with the bottle on or after you shut it down?

I kinda figure it was from the hose. Its really light amount more like it was blown on from moving. Rear main more dark in color and wet.

I just got done changing my rear seal today. It wasn't leaking but I replaced it bc I thought it was leaking and had the new one. Wound up being Input shaft retainer seal.

TKarnas,

I took a large pill bottle, approx. 2" dia. by 4" long. Cut a hole in the lid for the breather hose and punched some small vent holes around the breather hose hole. Stick the breather hose through the lid and secure with a ny-tie on the breather hose. I put a little cotton in the pill bottle to help collect the vapor.

I drain/clean the catch bottle every month or so.

If my rear main was leaking what would this look like? Im thinking oil down the back of the oil pan would be a good indicator? The oil is see seems to be just on the bottom of the pan and transmission pan. Its hard to tell if the oil is coming down or being blown back from the blow off tube.

Are you sure it is not ATF? Our 48re's have a weep/breather hole on the upper/inside of the bell housing. If you overfill it, even slightly, it will force ATF out this hole and make a mess like you are describing.

You did say it was dark in color, just trying to cover all possibilities.

Yes it could be I will need to look at it again. Dark in color. Just had some work done on the transmission. The gov selenoid to stop it seaking. I have not checked it since the work has been done. Can you see the weep hole from under the truck? I remember seeing one of the screws with the spring on it(driver side) have a little weeping out of the threads.

This post is dead on for what happened on mine. After having a new TC installed, I my transmission pan was staying black. I would clean it up and the next oil change it would be wet again and dirty.

I checked the ATF level and it was a little high. I took out some of the fluid and the problem stopped.

I checked the transmission fluid level, and its a little high. Will it hurt anything in the transmission if I let it? I do not have a drain plug in the pan so I would have to break the pan away.

My TC is a Suncoast with a drain plug so I drained it from there. I don't think it will hurt if it is a little high but I know my shifting hasn't been as harsh since I got it back to where it should be. You could take a transmission cooler line loose and get some from there or one of the drill mount pumps with a line down the filler tube will work, too.

If you overfill the transmission, it tends to cause foaming, which is not in your best interest (harsh shifts, pounds hard when putting in park, eratic behavior, etc. ).

I would drain some out, you could crack open a cooling line if you do not want to drop the pan.

I do not seem to have the hard shifts (besides the shift kit) or problems with park. I will look into dropping a line. But will need to look at the leak since I had the transmission worked on, it may have gone away.

Running the trans overfull won't hurt anything. Just gives you a little extra fluid for cooling and lube. I typically run 1. 5 to 2 quarts over the full mark with no issues. Don't worry about it. ;)

update... . Looks like the leak has stopped !! It must have been coming out of a weep hole. Drove it for the past two weeks and still dry... What a load off the mind.

Thanks to all

I have a 04. 5 I've had to replace two pinion seals, left rear axle seal, and right rear axle seal just started leaking. I wasn't sure if my rear main seal was leaking or if it was from the bypass tube. So I extended the blow by tube with a piece at a 45 degree angle to about half way down the trans. There was a spot on the six speed that's ideal for hooking the tube to. Cleaned up my bell housing and the seal is leaking. Not bad enough to warrant taking it apart, but at 67K I think this is a bit ridiculous. I'll change it when it's time for a clutch unless it gets worse. Good Luck
