Hey guys,

I am working on a friends 2004 305/555 w/106,000mi and it's kinda got me stumped. I have read and reread all the posts related to this and still not sure what the problem is. Here is what happened

He just fueled the truck, and traveled a few miles when it started missing and then just died, would not restart. First thing that came to my mind was that he accidentally filled it with gas, but he swears the he did not and I cannot smell any in fuel.

It died near a small auto shop, they said it had a code for a bad cps, supposedly the replaced that with no change. According to them they replaced the fuel filter also. No change with either one. So he brought it to me, and I haven't been able to do much better, but here is what I have found. Turns over fine, but sounds bad, like a bad cyl/inj and it's trying to fire. It will actually crank and run when I pinch off the return line, whether the one to tank or the one to the CP3 from the overflow on the rail. Didn't do that much, not sure what the ramifications could be from doing that, but at first when I pinched them off, it would crank but not stay running, then the more I pinched the return line(over a couple days) the better it cranked, it would continue to run while the return was pinched off and now it will crank and run unaided , albeit not well.

I did check the overflow on the rail and fuel is not coming out, but there is quite a bit that comes out the return line to the CP3. When i do get it running it sounds pretty bad, like a bad inj. (could be) revs ok though. I checked each cyl with a ir gun and it seems all are running about 150-200deg except #1 which wasn't but about 80deg:eek: this was after only a minute or two of idling. Only code showing was P0480 until after this last round of testing and it shows P0088 now. Have not checked fuel pressure as just now got truck started, lift pump seems to run ok.

Any ideas? High probability to be injectors (esp #1), after seeing how many are having trouble, but could also be the FCA. I am not real familiar with these common rails, maybe someone that is could help. Thanks

Steven
