I read the article an issue or two ago in the TDR publication that explained how the 04 trucks would get hardware upgrades to make them exhaust brake compatible. IF or WHEN Chrysler allows exhaust brakes to be standard in 04. 5, will we will be able to upgrade or re-flash our 04 trucks with the newer software.

With all the changes taking place for the new emissions engine for 04. 5, I question weather or not the new hardware is even on 04 trucks build this fall. Maybe they are still wired and programed the same as late 03 models and we haven't seen the hardware changes yet for the PCM.

Are there any techs out here on the forum that can confirm the hardware changes? Are the 04 trucks being controlled by the Mopar computer as a stand alone now?

I have not read anything since the introduction of 04 on the streets yet to lead me to believe there is anything different.

Don,

From what I have read the answer is NO. There are upgrades being made to the 48RE to support the new ECM/software that will make them compatible with the E-brakes.

Don,

My one month old 04 3500 HO 4X4 with 48RE doe not have a PCM unit controlling the automatic. The truck matches the 04 shop manual that has all functions of the PCM on diesel unit with an 48RE being done by the ECM that comes from Cummins. This is a newer ECM as it has extra input/output from the 48RE now. I don't know if any of the programming is in this ECM for any E-Brake support or if that is all part of the new program that will be hopefully available at a later date.

artie,

Thanks, I think you answered my question. It does look like there is one box now that controls all functions instead of two or three separate boxes. This would support the article I read in TDR that 04's will have the new hardware for engine and power train control and then next year we could have a software upgrade to control the exhaust brake to OEM approval.
