Ck Eng Code P0251

This truck has 51000 miles on it, when I go to start it now it only runs for about a second and shuts off. It will do this multiple times. The diesel is good, I've changed both fuel filters, stock and 2 micron. I let the Fass low pressure fuel pump run for about 2 seconds and it pumped about a pint through the stock fuel filter drain. I'm wondering if maybe there is a low fuel pressure shut off system on the high press pump or maybe some sort of check valve that could stick. Or hopefully not the high press pump could have failed. Any help much appreciated. Regards, Tom

It hasn't stored any DTC's. I haven't found any relays or fuses yet. I think I have a service manual in my computer, will look there. Regards, Tom

I would think with the 3 um filter on it the system should have been protected except for gasoline or a LOT of water. With only 51k I would load the filter your favorite cleaner and get it to actually run a couple of times to work it through then let it sit. If that fails, time for an FCA and see if that helps.

Is it by chance dying when you back the key off the start circuit?

There wasn't any water at all in the diesel that was pumped through the filter drain. It starts then runs for about one second in the run position of the key. I compared the fuel with fuel out of my tractor fuel container and it looked, smelled and burnt the same so I think it's ok. The truck hasn't been driven much in the last few years but it's kept in a dry shop. About every month or two one of the relatives will need something heavy hauled. It did 8 dump trailer loads of gravel 40 mile round trips just before it quit running. The engine speed can be ran up during the one second. I keep thinking maybe a relay that the coil overheats in one second, or something like a 15psi requirement for the CP3 to keep running but the Fass might only put out 14psi. I'll figure out how to get a fuel pressure reading sometime in the next few days. Thanks and Regards, Tom

The CP3 doesn’t need pressure to run, just volume. The stock pump generally runs in the 5-8 psi range without issue. The CP3 can also draw fuel under a vacuum, depending on the restriction.

What are you using to check codes?

Can you hear the FASS running when it dies?

I checked codes with my Mads Electronics Smarty S-06 PoD, I have used the 30hp setting since I got it. Good question on whether the pump runs after the engine stops. I'll check that tomorrow. Thanks and Regards, Tom

You might have stated the problem, the indicator between the volt meter and the speedometer does keep blinking. I only have one key and an un-programed key plus the fob. I will go out this afternoon and time the flashing, the owners manual says the flashing should be fast for 16 seconds and then slow down if the security system is engaged. I'm wondering if the good? key and the fob would be enough to program the unprogramed key? I'm wondering if this might be a good time to disconnect the batteries for 30 minutes? Thanks and regards, Tom

The light stays on for about 2 seconds then flashes roughly once per second for at least 25 seconds when I turned the key off. The low pressure pump does run after the engine dies. Thanks and Regards, Tom

You have a SKIM problem. There should be a code or two stored. Actually after you try and start it several times it should also stop cranking.

There were no codes as of yesterday and I have tried starting it about 20 times over the last 8 days. The only thing that happened before this started was charging for a couple of days because I left the hood open over night and wanted to top off the batteries. It was a little giant 3 amp three stage charger however I've used it several times in the past and suffered no problems. I'll check for codes again tomorrow. Thanks and Regards, Tom

How do you read the codes?
Not all are shown in the Cluster, some are Scanner only and some of them are only read with wiTech or another decent Scantool.

With only one programmed key* you're in for a trip to the dealer.

*that doesn't start the truck.

One last chance; Disconnect the batterys, charge the batterys unconnected for at least 48h (with that weak charger), reconnect batterys, LOCK the doors with the Fob, OPEN the Doors with the Fob, immediately try to Start with the previously working Key.

If that doesn't help you have to see the Dealer.

I'll start that procedure today and we'll see what happens. I want to exhaust all possibilities of self repair before using the dealer, big bux. Thanks and Regards, Tom

While you're waiting for the batteries to charge try calling some local locksmiths and see if they have a mobile service that can reprogram your key fobs. A friend of mine runs a local garage but doesn't have the computer to program a central timer module we needed programmed on an 02 Durango. He gave me the contact he use's and we called him directly and the guy came to my house and programmed the module. It was less than $150. That's if Ozy's procedure doesn't work. Worth a shot.

Hey, I forgot to fill everybody in on the cure for the problem. I had it towed to the local dealer and it turned out the the key had become unprogramed. Of course that was the last thing checked. So to reprogram the key and have a new one made cost about $272
