Below freezing morning starts:

My '99 had "wait to start" light while heat grid warmed up, then you crank the starter to start

On a 2005 are you supposed to wait also for heat grid warm up before starting? no wait to start light.

Since its a different injector pump system on my 2005, is there no need to wait for the intake to warm up?

.

No need to wait, you'll learn by trial and error at which temperatur the grid heater is needed as an aid.
Mine starts fine down to -20°F without it, starts rough at -30° and almost impossible without at -40°F.

Are you saying you don’t have a WTS light?

Forgive me if 3rd Gen’s don’t, I’ve never owned one.

Some reading available as a download, full of good information in the 2005 2500 Ram CTD Owner's Manual.

DOM OM (rammanuals.com)

Item 19 is the wait to start light.

I have the indicator light with the "wire coil" that goes on. Figured it was grid heater. Didnt say wait.

I have a "door ajar" light too. when my door is open. Doesnt show it in the diagram above.

The coil is the standard symbol for glow plug / grid heater and the exact same as wait to start. You are supposed to wait but as Ozzy noted they start just fine without until you get to very low temperatures.

Quick funny / sad story, my old employer had a 2003 5.9 CTD and one co worker noted the truck must have came from Mexico, we all stared at him wondering what he was talking about. His reply was since it said " Door Adjar" and Adjar must be Spanish as he never heard it before then the truck must have came from Mexico... ( MPH speedo and all) .. Kids these days .................

Do you have a copy of your owners manual? If not, you can download one from Ram’s website.

As far as WTS the programming is setup around emissions more than a starting aid, to a point. The WTS light will occur when the intake air temp is below 66°F, that’s for emissions. Cummins has stated that these motors don’t need a starting aid above 10°F, so that’s a big temperature range of not really needed. I routinely bypassed the WTS light on my 05, until I reprogrammed it with my MM3. After reprogramming it came on briefly starting at 32° but didn’t really have a lot of time built into it until below 20°.

I even did a winter without a grid heater and never had starting issues, even well below -10°F… though she didn’t really sound happy.

Even on my 6.7’s I bypass the WTS routinely, aside from remote starts where I can’t. These engines start very easily in the cold.

I disconnected the grid heater on my '99.

Yes I have a owners manual for my 05. But its in my truck, in the shop, away from my house. And I aint walking all the way down there. ;)

But you appear to have internet access... it's always nice to have a digital copy handy too.

I don't know if I have opened my paper one yet, but I use the digital one often.

Posts 5 and 9 suggest downloading a copy so you may enjoy a copy anytime on your computer.
Like AH64ID, I use the digital copies on my computers and cell phone for all the times the paper one is "somewhere else".
