After the truck has been sitting for a long period, (at least 18 hours), it wont start. But after i finally get it running it will start for me all day long. Does anyone know what this problem might be? i would appricieate any and all input.

Had the same problem in my 98. 5. Fuel was draining back to tank, so when I cranked it, there was no fuel to start running. Next time truck sits for a while, and you are pretty sure it isn't going to start normally, turn the key to the On position and wait for about 10 seconds, then try cranking it. That's what I did and it worked until I could get it to the mechanic.

ether. didnt want to use it, but didnt have much choice. i just purchased the truck. and the dealer has tried to fix the problem twice. they are still trying to make good on the deal, and i believe that they will. but i would like to know what problems could be causing it. thanks for your input. i will check it.

Welcome to the forum!

If it does have a check valve, you can bump the start leaving the key on. When the fuel pump quits running, try a restart than.

Oh, and DBF

I had a 95 that did that after about 80K on the clock. Mine turned out to be a 16"+/- fuel line hose that developed pin holes and at night it would drain. It did leave a small fuel wet spot on the driveway. In the day time it would kick right over.

Any codes? Is the truck stock or modified? Have the batteries been load tested or known good? When it does start, does it smoke immediately after starting? Try plugging it in and see if it starts normally after sitting. May be able to determine if this is a time or temperature related issue.

Hey thanks alot gents. I will do some checking on all that you have told me. It does have very long crank time, even if it has been running at temp, and I shut it off, then instantly try to start again.

Is it an auto or manual transmission?

If its an auto, definitely sounds like a developing injector problem with a cold no start and and a long warm start.

Manuals had an issues with synching the cam and crank sensor to the point where it took a long crank to get it to fire correctly. There was a flash at one time to help that but the actual results were not spectacular.

Could still be an injector problem or possibly the transfer tubes need repalced\re-tightened. Has the delaer run a the battery of test on injector return flow and cylinder cntribution, plus compared actual rail pressure to demanded during these hard start periods?
