2005 making smoke!

My son-in-law just bought a used 2005 with 14K miles on the odometer. He loves the truck and was telling me the smoke it produces when he gets on it hard.

I didn't think you could get smoke from a stock Cummins. It sounds to me like someone has chipped the engine (and left it in there) or there's s problem with it.

Any thoughts on this?

Probably just soot in the exhaust system.



I blow mine out about once a month by shifting down to 5th and accellerating



up a hill. Smokes for about 100 yds. or so.

His will do it any time he stomps on it. Says it smoke pretty good too.

I just thought the electronics and computer software would keep the fueling below the smoke level.

My 05 just started doing this... . Always "puffed" at take off but now is really laying it out till boost is built up, I had about 10 gallons of suspect fuel and has done it since. Am leaning towards bad pump and /or injectors.

Mine has done it since it was new. Especially if I'm in a driving situation where I'm just easing along and then get the opportunity to accelerate hard.



I think it is just a characteristic of the 05's.

I test drove a '03 or '04 at the Farm Prgress Show when it was in IA last time. It had a 6spd, and it would smoke when you got on it, too.

Maybe the turbo isn't efficient for the output of the fuel on these motors at a lower rpm or under a load

Mine only seems to smoke when its cold. I have an EZ and no Kat. When I still had the Kat I never saw smoke.

Before my kitty ran away with the stock muffler (and to some extent afterwards), after a little while of driving easy, enough soot apparently collected in the exhaust to make a very impressive cloud the first time you jumped on it, quickly diminishing after that first shot. When it's warm out the truck will likely smoke more than when it's cold out, due to less overall oxygen available in the air for efficient combustion when it's hot. I'm going to vote black smoke is normal on the 2005 diesels.

Mine does this, especially if I haven't pulled anything for a few thousand miles. I find my truck runs much smoother and smokes less after grabbing onto 10K or so and driving the c**p out of it.

My '05 does it and has done it since new (8 miles on the odo when I picked it up). I am completely stock and have been since new. It will smoke more when towing and I stand on it. I am at 69000+ miles and counting now.



All stock CTDs through '05s at least will do it to some extent.



I wouldn't sweat it. Sounds like a good truck.

My 05 smoked off the dealer lot when new. It is affected by ambient temp, how long since you got on it, and I think fuel. But generally I can make it smoke almost any time I want. Taught me to drive a little different, and sure enough my mpg went up!

My '05 smokes when you get on it. Don't sweat it, I haven't driven a cummins yet that didn't smoke at least at low RPM's with a heavy foot.

OK... I'll stop worrying. I can't get my '02 to smoke under any conditions. i just wanted to be sure he didn't have a problem with the engine.

Another testimonial- my 05 bone stock also smokes quite visibly when right foot is extended. Gentle acceleration is fine even when towing, but anything aggressive and the tailpipe reveals itself to everybody else.
