Mopar in tank lift pump replacement question

Working on a 2005 for a friend. He bought it at an auction. It was running fine at the auction, but when he went to get it, it would not start. It spins over fine. The lift pump is getting plenty of fuel up to the CP3, and the CP#3 is getting fuel up to the injectors. All parts of the fuel system look nice and clean. A tiny snrt of ether will crank it right up. It runs OK once started except for a little idle irregularity and the throttle acts a little screwy. If you give it a little throttle when in park it idles up and stays there for a little bit and then slowly works its way back down to idle. It does kind of the same thing when you are driving. When you let off the pedal it is slow to return to idle, but it eventually does. It will not start hot, cold or anywhere in between without a small shot of ether.

Tomorrow I am going to do a return flow test on the fuel system and see if that is the problem. I am guessing with these symptoms that it will be one or multiple bad injectors. Anyone else have any insight?

Where's the least expensive place to send the injectors to get them fixed?

FWIW, the last "no start, but starts with ether" thread I read was found to be bad injectors. I read this on another site, the owner replaced about everything on the fuel system but injectors. Finally replaced injectors and everything was fine. I don't know why it caused it, but that was his fix.

Something to start looking at for trouble shooting.

You are right on the money. I got pretty lucky diagnosing this one. It turned out to be the first one I tried. I capped off the line going to number one and it fired up with no ether. I'm going to start with one injector and see how it does. I told him to be prepared to buy 6 though.

The problem as I understand it is that the injectors are leaking high pressure fuel and the CP3 doesn't make enough pressure at cranking speed for the computer to let the injectors fire. The ether gives it enough rpm to make the necessary pressure.

If that one injector is leaking that bad then make sure you get that oil changed soon. Also when you pull that one injector you may want to bore scope the cylinder walls to check for abnormal wear. That cylinder may have been washing itself down at idle for a while. Hince being at an auction. NOTE: Ether and heater grids can be hazardous to your health and the owners insurance policy:-laf

The injector is not leaking into the cylinder. It's leaking inside and going out the return. There's no fuel in the oil and no engine damage. It just won't start.

Always either disconnect the heater or at least wait until they're cool to give it a snort.
