Hi guys,

My buddy called me tonight and said his 2005 CTD is "blowing oil" out and he was told it was caused by cheap oil filters that collapsed and sent pieces of filter into the motor.

Has this happened to anyone and what was the fix?

If he needs a motor where is the best place to get one?

We used to hear of it here on TDR from time to time. It has been common knowledge among active TDR website members for years that Fleetguard/MOPAR filters should be used and most use them and I don't remember reading of an engine failure due to an aftermarket filter in a while. What brand of filter was he using?

IMO the best source for an engine if your friend plans to keep his truck is a Cummins Reman (remanufacturered by Cummins) available through Cummins dealers. The remans are built by the same standards as new engines by the same company and come with a reliable factory warranty.

Sure, he can get a cheaper price from his co-worker's brother-in-law who runs a dirty shop behind his house using cheap tools and cheap parts and it will probably run for a while.

i will bet he does not buy another fram oil filter. also wandering if he is running a k&n air filter. cummins is probably his best bet for a short block

Blowing oil out where?? The crank case vent?

If its the crankcase vent I would hazard a guess its bad injectors causing it.

The filter thing is an easy blame but the failures are few and far between. Do some checking before just throwing a motor at it.

And where did we see "Fram", or K&N mentioned in the lead post? ;):-laf

Yeah - "Blowing oil" might be colorful - but not very informative as to exactly what it means... ;)

How many miles?... Oil used? filter brand used? Is it blowing oil out the breather or the exhaust? You might check to see if the oil level is overfull first. As others have stated, if you have a bad injector, it can put fuel in the crankcase and overfill it. That will cause it to puke out the breather vent. If the crankcase pressure is excessive,(which CAN be measured with the correct tooling) it could be a scored/galled piston, but he should have some excessive noise and low power, and it probably won't run long before going to failure. I would probably get the truck to a reputable tech. and have an evaluation done.

As for oil filters, I have always believed that the OEM knows what they want on their equipment. If you have a Cat, use a Cat filter, same for Cummins, GM, Ford. . etc. . I personally would never buy a Fram, Quaker State, Penzoil, STP. . etc. . filter. Most of these are just repainted Frams.

I couldnt agree more with using a good oil filter. I personally buy a case of Mopar filters and Delo from Costco and just change my own oil.

On the other hand my Buddy has his changed at the local quick lube place. I am sure they arent using a good filter.

I just tried calling him to get details on what filter and where exactly it is "blowing oil"

I will post as soon as he calls back. Thanks

He just called me back and told me it "looks" like the oil is coming from the filler tube. I mentioned the leaking injector and he told me he just had the dealer change the oil. When I asked if it was still pushing oil right after the oil change he did not know because he did not check... ... ... He said it runs fine and has good oil pressure and I told him it might be a bad injector. He is taking it to a diesel mechanic today.

I will keep you posted. Thanks

The filler tube? Oil is filled through the cap in the valve cover. I can't imagine oil being pumped out of the valve cover.

Update: I just saw my friend yesterday and he was driving a 2009 CTD ... ..... I don't even want to tell you what they gave him for the trade in of his 05.....

Well, I guess the story has a happy ending. I wish we had been able to learn what the problem was if there even was a problem.

I hope your friend uses quality MOPAR or Fleetguard filters in his '09.

Almost all lube centers warranty their filters and their work to meet or exceed OEM standards... . I know its now past tense... . but he might have asked the lube center to pay the bill. .

We've got a large truck stop with lube center attached at a freeway interchange here in Spokane... I was chatting with one of the managers... he said in the past 2 months they've lost 3 engines where they didn't put enough oil in the pan... and the trucks got out of town and melted down... . Of course they've now fired the guys who touched the truck be he guessed the cost per truck will exceed 15K each... . all the trucks were under 2 years old.....

If he has a leaking injector that is filling the crancase with fuel, He should STOP driving it and get it checked ASAP. Have him check the oil level AND smell the oil and see if it smells like Diesel fuel. If it is over full and smells like fuel then he has an injector issue. Otherwise, He should take it back to the dealer that did the service. GOD only knows what they did!!!
