Hello
I have a 2005 Cummins and it's having some weird electrical issues. I think there may be a communication issue over the bus with the ECM. Can anybody recommend a good service to bench test and repair this module? I've looked around on here but haven't found any recommendations. The truck is a quad cab, long bed, 4wd, SRW.
I was a mechanic before going in to engineering and usually am pretty good with diagnosis although I haven't worked on these trucks specifically for a living. What is happening is that the tach and speedo lag as my speed is changing. This is most noticeable when accelerating on an on ramp but it happens intermittently at any speed. I've connected my scanner and there are no DTCs related to the ECM but when I try Dodge OEM live data it sometimes works and sometimes cannot communicate or loses communication to ECM. Powertrain live data and ecm active test cannot connect at all. The scanner is an Innova 5610.
Here are some other codes I have received:
ABS 01 Left Front Sensor Circuit Failure
ABS 56 no definition
Occupant Restraint Controller 0019 no cluster messages
Misfire monitor is incomplete
FCM 0154 Loss of JTEC ($35) J1850 message
FCM 0101 Rear left turn output circuit low
FCM 0096 Right stop lamp output circuit open
FCM 0094 Left stop lamp output circuit open
The instrument cluster passes the self test but shows the following codes:
64 Driver door lock switch input circuit open. 29 times
A5 TCCM messages not received. 03 times
Ive replaced the following parts: TIPM and FCM from Maks TIPM rebuilders, differential speed sensor, transmission speed sensor. Maks is sending me another TIPM and FCM under warranty to try.
I do have the air bag light coming on with chime but then there are no codes for that. New Dorman clock spring was previously installed and resolved a squib circuit code.
I put an Edge CTS3 juice with attitude on the truck but these issues were present before. I cannot turn the power level up on it above 0 or else the truck will hesitate under acceleration but Edge is taking it back for an inspection. I have noticed driving on rough roads off-road the edge display will lose connection and I have to unplug and plug back in the OBD.
The truck also has an intermittent abs code: "Left Front Sensor Circuit Failure" but I have a new Timken unit bearing that came with a new sensor and I inspected the harness going to the module plus replaced the connector. I also replaced the ABS module with an A1 Cardone but this code remained. I ran through all the testing in the manual for this and it passed the tests except for the + circuit shorted to voltage test although the wiring to the sensor looks fine. Pretty stumped on this intermittent code, the ABS does work fine.
Now the "Lamp Out" light is on the cluster and the right side brake light doesn't work but I recently replaced all the bulbs, cleaned the connectors and applied dielectric grease.
Battery voltage looks good and alternator outputs 14.73v
I'm considering sending out the cluster and abs module for bench test as well.
Please let me know if you guys have any advice. Thank you
Andy
