The EGT on my 2005 Ram 2500 automatic has increased. Is there a "normal" EGT range for non-towing light duty or am I just worrying too much?

I have a Westach Combo Boost/EGT gauge http://www.genosgarage.com/WESTACH-...EGT-1_8-NPT/productinfo/WM-CG-8/#.VbEilf3bJus

The EGT probe is mounted a little rearward of the 1/2 way point between #3 and #4 cylinders.

The temps are as follows:

Idling - it shows just below 300 degrees
Light load - (away from a traffic light) 900 degrees
Power brake to 2500 RPM - 1000 degrees

It did not used to be this high.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your assistance in advance.

you do not show to have a programmer so assume stock and they appear normal, the 05 with the in-cylinder egr can reach 1500* under load and still have lower peak temp than a 03 at 1200*

Thank you for your reply. I am starting an 8,000 mile trip so I took the Edge programmer I had on it off. So you are correct in the assumption that it does not have a programmer on it.

The Edge was probably doing timing that reduced the observed EGT's somewhat. Put it back on and see if you can recreate the difference then you will know.

Other causes of elevated EGT's are trans\clutch failing, injectors over fueling, fuel system in need of cleaning\service. I would investigate a bit more for peace of mind.

My stock '05 would get to 1300 pretty quickly if pulling heavy and heavy on the skinny pedal. IIRC, boost would flash up to about 32 and then settle in around 30 in a hard pull.

I will second this.... pulling my camper and accelerating up a grade I have hit 1250-1275 pretty easily with a completely stock truck.

When I had injector start failing on a stroke my egt's jumped a couple hundred degrees across the board. I was stupid ignorant and it took me a while to figure this out.

Where you have put your probe you might have a injector getting weak down stream of your probe. Other cylinders will have to work harder to make same power?

Just a thought. I have not had that issue yet with my cummins.

Those temps are actually cool for an 04.5-07. As CKelley mentioned they run HOT!! 1450-1500° under heavy towing is the normal temp. The 04.5-07 uses a very retarded timing map which reduces cylinder temps (and power) which in turn increases EGT's.

Yep, what he said.

Thats great to know, thanks!

Granted my camper is not heavy so i haven't worked her that hard.. at what temp on EGT's should one start backing out of the skinny pedal? I have my alarm set at 1300 now... is that too low / high???

I would turn it off if you are 100% stock, or at 1450-1500 if you have to have it.

To give you an idea of how emissions oriented the timing profile is I have seen gains of 55rwhp on timing alone and that is not excessive timing either.

I have a 2004.5 with a SmartyJr. set on level 2 for towing and I always thought 1250 should be max continuous, is that conservative then?

There is a big difference bewtween a stock truck and a tuned truck. With the added timing of the Smarty JR 1250 is a good number for max continious.
