September Austin Meeting

Something to ponder

To Whom It May Concern:

I am posting to inform whomever that I am officially resigning from The Texas Rally Event Coordinator.

As you know the rally is scheduled and will take place.

Its been a pleasure at times but it has been very trying most of the time and I just don't have it in me to do it anymore.

If someone wants the position please contact Curtis Harris.

Good Luck, Michael

Mike, thanks for doing such a good job at what must ofttimes seem to be a thankless task. I hate to see you leave it but I can certainly understand why. Hopefully someone who has the time & desire can pick up where you, Pam, & Curtis left off.

Note to Mike

Michael, I just wanted to drop you a note concerning your decision to resign as event coordinator. Having been involved to a much lesser extent in the events, I am sure that the pressures on your time (& time is money when you are self employed) have at times been excruciating. We, as a group, are sorry to see you leave, but to a person, wish nothing but the best for you.

My two cents:

MDW and Curtis have worked very hard, spending a lot of their own personal time and money to organize the Texas Roundups in the past. It's only fair for anyone representing their business at such an event to either pay a modest vendor's fee, or otherwise sponsor or support the cost of the event. $75 to have that big (and very sharp looking) rolling business card in front of hundreds of performance diesel enthusiasts is a BARGAIN, whether you're there to sell products or not. I'm sure I'm not the only person who had never heard of you before and likely did business with you after seeing you at the Roundup.

Out of fairness to whoever ends up organizing the event in the future, I think it only makes sense to charge a small per-truck attendance fee for casual participants, and charge a reasonable vendor's fee for anyone displaying any promotional signage on their trailer, etc. I'd personally be happy to pay something to help offset the cost in dollars and hours spent organizing these events. The people who organize fun things like this should NOT be taken for granted, or expected to do it for nothing, much less on their own dime. I hardly believe that if a guy is driving a truck that sold for over $30k new could not afford to pay a little something in exchange for some quality entertainment. Most folks can't get away with going to a movie theater, music concert, or amusement park for free. . . . so why should the Roundup be any different?

Rant mode off. . .

We just got a call from the campsite.

Due to the lack of campsite reservations(only 1 to date), the 2005 Texas Rally is cancelled. The number of reservations are the only way to insure that we have a building to hold the rally, and they have a group that wants to use the building and they have the numbers to make it happen. We didn't.

So far, no one has stepped up to help keep this going. With Michael starting HotRodDiesels and my new job, neither of us has the time or energy to put something like this together. We both hate to see the rally go away, but we've done all we can for the past 5 years.

I do hope to see everyone at the DHRA Nationals on November 12th at Houston Raceway Park

cancelled????

:-{} I guess I had the only reservation; which I just cancelled. :( Seems a shame that among a group of truck lovers with as many members as we have no one could pick up the ball. (Myself included  ) for future reference I will be available to help, not lead,(I spend too many days on the road) any effort to gather up as many trucks as possible for any excuse, camping, road rallies, mod parties, etc. I am not hard to find, & many of you know me personally. When I am not traveling I am available any day of the week.

Lets not forget that the original reason for the various chapters was to be among like people to express our devotion to diesel trucks,( Dodge in particular!), to learn & explore the limits of performance, to meet & make new friends, & to be there when needed.

I am now officially off the rant mode. :)

I had planned to make my reservation today. I will miss the Rally as a chance to see the folks I have gotten to know over the last years. I always enjoyed seeing past customers, future customers, and answering questions about the transmissions in our trucks. I also enjoyed the drive to and from through the hill country. Well, maybe next year.
