Has any one had to replace the valve cover because the breather is not a serviced part? What did you do about the engine ser# tag on the old valve cover?

Busy with the house today, will jump into Cummins Quick Serve tonight when I have a minute and check this out for you.

Doesn't sound quite right... ... .

If the Net doesn't go down because a snow covered tree falls on the wire... .

6-12" predicted for tonight... ... ...

Mike. :)

I don't own the later truck with the composite valve cover, but I would suspect that the breather is nothing more than an oil separator and requires no service. I got duped into that once when I had a Ford van with a 7. 3 engine that the CDR valve had to be replaced. It was just another scam to sell parts. My old Mercedes has an oil separator in the air filter and it also does not require any service.

Just took five and had a look, used the ESN from my '06 to go by.

Your signature doesn't mention if you have the 5. 9 or the 6. 7 engine.

There is no filter and no mention of one in a 5. 9. I checked the crankcase ventilation group and the valve cover group.

I suspect it is no more than a screen or a partion built into the valve cover as rcurtis said.

Now the 6. 7L engine does have a filter in the valve cover that is serviceable, that may be what is confusing you.

If you have an '07 5. 9L you are good to go. Nothing to maintain or change in the valve cover that I can see.

If I missing something here someone please correct me.

Mike. :)

2007. 5 6. 7 and up use Fleetguard crankcase breather p/n CV52001. It's not a real good picture but here it is on FLG website :
http://cumminsfiltration.com/catalo...case Ventilation Kit&partflag=0&currentPage=1 It fits all 6. 7s and looks like a pleated air filter enclosed in a plastic housing. 2003-2005 use a small breather that is totally different and is service under the Cummins p/n 39579787. It doesn't need to be changed as often as the newer version. 2006-07 5. 9 are part of the valve cover. Shadrach

The 5. 9 CTD uses a Fleetuard CCV mounted on top of the REAL valve cover, but underneathe the plastic shield that one sees when you op the hood.

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ssions-2007-5/232524-ccv-fitler-location.html

There is a pic of the 5. 9L, post# 9, on this thread.
At post #10 is a pic of the CCV from a 6. 7L.

Previous opinions are also correct--

The CCV filter on the 5. 9L is maintenance free, unless for some reason the hoses or o-ring is leaking.
It is simply an oil/vapor separator.

The CCV filter on the 6. 7L IS a maintenace required part and apparently needs regular replacement.

I just checked the Fleetguard website by application using the '06 as a pattern, it does not show a crankcase breather filter available.

How are you coming to the conclusion that this CV52001 is used on a 5. 9L CTD??

Let me know.

Mike. :)

I can get you a Fleetguard Part # on the 5. 9L CCV if you want one.

I am beginning to wonder if the 5. 9L breather depends on the state emissions the engine was built to.

Mine is built to Maine Emissions for example.

Or it was a mid-year production change.

I just checked and my engine was built 10/27/2005.

My '06 does not have one, Cummins Valve Cover Group VC9278-01 states the following... ...

CCV COMPATIBLE : NO.

You guys with access to QuickServe check it out using ESN 57451227.

Picture here, the text I cannot move so that it makes any sense.

I am now thinking some '06 trucks have one and some don't.

Well I don't have an 06 in the yard,

but for what it's worth, here is the one the is printed on the actual CCV on my truck.

It reads--

Fleetguard Enviroguard

Assembly #3957987, #3957926

and Here is a pic just for kicks--

That shows an in use date of 2003, they must have stopped using anything for a while in '06.

This is new... ...

Seafish filter location...

Roughly how your valve cover looks compared to mine...

Mike. :)

Well that is actually really interesting that they stopped using them on 2006 and 2007, but by 2007. 5 they upsized the CCV substantially, of course, likely to do with the added EGR needs of the 6. 7L CTD.

Your likely right that it's presence on the 5. 9 has to to do with state by state emissions reqs.

But does that mean that the 2006 and 2007 WITHOUT a filter like the one pictured just use the older spit bottle method of cranckase ventilation?

I mean that presurized vapor/liquid mist has to go somewhere, right ??

What does your 2006 have for CV ??

If the 06+ version doesn't drool oil all over the top of the engine like my 03 then I would sure like to retrofit to it.

Probably just loose hoses or O-ring on the CCV.

The hoses fit on WITHOUT barbs or clamp and likely stretch over time, like all rubber hoses... you might try cutting them back an inch to see if that helps or add a zip tie or light duty clamp.

Also, I don't see why you couldn't pry up the CCV, hook the o-ring off, and replace it with another identical or slightly thicker one.

I figure it would take about 30 minutes and $5 to do all of that if you don't have to run too far to get the o-ring.

I have had my CCV off just for kicks, but it doesn't leak (yet, right :-laf) so I have not added clamps or the changed o-ring, but that's what I'll do if it does start to leak.

I'm amazed Seafish, mine has leaked since new. I've replaced the o-ring and I dont think it leaks there but it does seep through all the hose connections even though I've installed clamps. I might try the zip-ties. What the heck it can't hurt.

You could even try a thin smear of silicone on the hose connectors before you put the hose on, then zip tie or clamp >??

You know, I actually tried that a couple of years ago but it leaked after a short time and when I took it apart the silicone was loose like a limp noodle.

It was the clear type though - maybe I should use the good stuff for better results. Same probably goes for booze. .

Also try cleaning both surfaces well acetone before you apply the silicone.

I'll follow the hose routing to see where they go in the daylight Saturday, I suspect that the CCV is simply a screen in the valve cover as mentioned before.

Will also price my style of valve cover and see if the vent hoses are the same or not between the two styles.

Maybe it be worth retrofitting for the guys that have constant drooling going on, my hoses and connections are dry as a bone.
