My stock '06 4x4 Automatic with 103k left me on the side of the road several weeks ago. I was on a trip and every time I would get into the pedal, it would stutter and produce a big cloud of black smoke for a couple of seconds then run smooth. While accelerating to highway speed after driving through a town it finally died.

After getting it home and borrowing a scan tool, I found these codes:

P0251

P0237

P0069

P0029

I started throwing parts at it, I've replaced the FCA,MAP sensor and CPI sensor.

Also I've replaced the cascade over flow valve.

Batteries are new. I've isolated each injector at the rail with a cap and checked the torque on the crossover tubes. I plugged the PRV on the rail also.

When cranking the motor, white smoke comes from the exhaust.

Any advise or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a timing issue on the older 2nd gen trucks.

I'm just shooting in the dark here, but check your position sensors (crank and cam).

These truck still have the 2 piece tone wheel on the crankshaft between #4 and #5?

i know its a diff truck but i hava 07 powerstroke wrecker i use for work and it did same thing... ended up being inkection module... . just thought id throw that out thr

Someone had a similar problem recently with a newer truck. A rock had been thrown up and damaged the crank angle sensor at the front of engine. bg

I have a 03 3500 5. 9 diesel that has that same code p0251. Starts fine cold & runs down the highway great, but after you stop & shut it off it will not start untill it cools down about 3-6 hours later , i've been checking parts but stiil no luck. Thanks ron
