I just got a call from my Dad. His 2006 has died on him twice in 10 minutes, both times shortly after getting to 70.

It's a 2006 5. 9 with a G56, and 110K miles. Prior to dying there is nothing abnormal on the dash or boost/EGT. He is towing, and probably around 18K GCW.

When it dies it just turns off. The check engine light blinks, check gauges comes on, tach and speedo go to zero, and I think voltage/fuel/coolant do as well.

He tried to pull codes with his Smarty Jr and there are no codes.

Any ideas?

I just got another call from him. He has had all the alarms come on twice, but it hasn't died in the last 10 minutes. He is trying to get back to the house.

He was departing for a 600 mile trip.

He found a couple of loose, not overly, battery terminals and ground straps. He had a clutch and turbo done last month and we are wondering if they disconnected stuff and didn't get it torqued.

He is not about 7-10 minutes without an issue, fingers crossed.

How do you reboot the system?, Monte

I have no clue.

So it seems the loose wire has fixed it, he has gone without a hickup for 20 miles and is continuing on with his trip.

Glad to hear. Reboot the system : disconnect the batteries and let it sit for 20-30 minutes then hook back up it.

. . and take a pair of jumper cables and tie the grounds together to make sure all the volatile memory discharges.

I didn't think that worked on modern ECM's that have writable memory?

The volatile memory that stores the adaptive learning info is what this reinitializes.

You would be surprised at the number of modern vehicles that this works on, and is often the first step in troubleshooting. It's like Windows/Microsoft got involved in making ECMs for autos.

Interesting, I really had thought that is no longer worked.

600 miles later, all towing, the issue is gone and can be chalked up to a loose ground.
