My truck is 10 yrs. Old. I am having the water pump replaced for the 4th time, meaning I am on my 5th waterpump. The repair cost is about $800.00. Garage says the pump cost them $450.00. Does this sound about right. Too, what might be causing the pump to fail every 2 yrs.?

It takes longer to drain the coolant than to change the pump, and the pump is inexpensive. Sadly, unless there is much more to the story, you are dealing with a "clip joint".

Wow…that garage is stiffing you !!! Or maybe they think that your truck is a Ford and are charing you book rates for the Ford, which is a MUCH more timely and complicated procedure then changing the water pump on your Cummins ISB. Either way, they are NOT to be trusted.

While the oem Cummins water pump, made by Concentric, IS expensive at about $165 through Cummins and possibly twice that from a Mopar dealership, they last MUCH longer then 2 years. But most all other aftermareket water pumps DO tend to fail after a couple years, don;t really know why, I just have to guess that they use cheaper bearings and/or seals. So all that being said, it seems VERY likely thatyour mechanic/garage is charging you dealership prices for the oem pump and then simply installing cheap aftremarket ones which are quickly failing on you…really the is NO other explanation to the failures, as the oem Cummins do NOT fail at that rate.

Like others have said, runaway from them, though perhaps give them a pice of your mind first.

What's better than one water pump? TWO water pumps like on this 6.7 PS Ford.

The one over the tensioner and the one on the right that looks like a Saginaw PS pulley are both water pumps.

Stick with OEM Cummins water pumps, and do it yourself. Buy them from Cummins or online, but NOT from anything with MOPAR/Dodge/RAM in the title as you will pay at least 3x the cost for the same part.

What is failing on the pumps? Is it the internal seal (water leak) or the bearing?

After you replace your water pump. Recommend using premixed antifreeze. It's more expensive this way. It will guarantee your local water supply is not the problem.

View attachment 94530I am curious to learn more about this problem. I am on my 3rd water pump. First one died at 48,000 miles from a bad bearing. Second one died after 50,000 miles with an impeller failure (see picture). Currently truck has 129,000 miles. All pumps are made by Concentric. First one replaced by dealer. Second one replaced by my mechanic. I plan to buy a spare pump and belt and keep in tool box on truck. Will very likely replace at 45,000 miles to avoid failure. I don't like sitting on side of hiway.

I have never had the impeller grenade like yours . Always the bearing/bushing getting sloppy. I don't think the bearing is large enough diameter along with to much stress from the belt. A nice billet retro would be awesome but the bottleneck would be the seal.
