2010 versus 2011

I am contimplating an exhaust brake for my 2006 5. 9 48RE 2500. I tow a 25' Artic Fox 5'er @ about 10,000# and occasionally a 18' tracker tundra behind

that @ about 3500#.

What exhaust brake would you recommend, and why? I'm leaning toward a pacbrake becaust of the air actuation and on board air tank.

I would appreciate any input on exhaust brakes.

I too have an Arctic Fox 5er, 27-5L.

About a two years ago I did extensive research on which EB to get. I decided on PacBrake because it's full time and there are no extra pulleys and belts. I also like the air compressor on board. The best reason is because Jim Gale (jelag), who I have the highest respect for, of formally Pacific Brake and Clutch in Spokane, WA highly recommended PacBrake.

Hope this helps, george

You will find most of the reccomendations are for the Pac PXRB. Its a great setup. I run the Jake and really like it thou.

Whatever brake you decide on ensure that its controlled by the ECM, not aftermarket tuning. The ECM runs the brake in the modes the trans was designed for.

If I were to do it over I'd do the PacBrake as the vacuum pump on the Jake seems to be a weak link.

I had to replace mine with inly 30K miles on it, and after reading different threads I am not expecting the new one to last much longer than that.

I have 53K on my vac pump, and dad has 55K on his. Neither show any signs of failure yet.

My understanding is that most vac pump failures are from vac leaks, so if you have a premature failure its a good idea to do a vac leakdown test when you install the new pump.

I bought a new '06 with 48RE and OEM Jacobs exhaust brake. The vacuum pump failed in the 60k range. The replacement was working fine when I sold the truck at 230k.

Question. I have an air compressor on truck (extreme air ) for air tools and tire replacement and the such. Would that work for the Pac brake and would it need some kind of press. regulator

Yes it would work, not sure on the psi reg. . It depends on where you have it set and what the PXRB uses.

Thanks to everyone for your input on EB. I'm still leaning toward the pakbrake, Is the pakbrake controlled though the ECM?

PFLORY, I see in your signature that you have the monster exhaust. Is it single or dual? and how do you like it? I'm looking at the banks dual monster exhaust when I include the EB.

WalkingTall, my Dad had a PacBrake installed on his 03 3500 QC Dually and he tows a 36' toy hauler around the country. He absolutely loves it! He is also on here. I think his tag is BBEAN or something similar. He'll be here Saturday night. I'll talk to him about it some more, as we haven't revisited the subject since December when he was still up north.

I have the Pac PRXB. My compressor failed after around 60K. I now have a 100% duty cycle Firestone compressor mounted under the bed that serves my brake, and my air bags. I also installed in cab controls for the bags and a quick disconnect chuck in the rear of my bed so I can air up my tires and the airbags on my trailer.

the bd is better because of where they mount the compressor. if you go bd and use your compressor you will need a regulator, the pac does not and will work off of your compressor. we had a high rate of failures on the pac compressors, after seeing how the bd was mounted we changed the mounting of the compressors and have had no more failures. there is a huge difference in stoping power between a bd or pac and the jake. as the vacuum pumps fail on our jakes we switch to bd's

Thanks to all... I ordered the pacBrake PRXB yesterday and am chomping at the bit to get it in and installed. Behind it will be a Banks Monster dual exhaust system.

Question. I have an air compressor on truck (extreme air ) for air tools and tire replacement and the such. Would that work for the Pac brake and would it need some kind of press. regulator

It will work. Should also be cheaper to buy the Ebrake minus the compressor. You will need a pressure regulator to lower the air pressure.

In case you weren't aware, Pacbrake is offering a $100 rebate on purchase price of the PRXB if purchased before March 1. See their website for details and rebate form.
