I like the keys for the new 2006. Does anyone know if they will work an older truck (Key blank) and then programed to replace the key ring fob on an 04+?

i sorta like the key, but with that, you can't leave your truck running with the doors locked. with the separate key fob, you can unlock/lock the doors with it with the key in the ignition [but with the fuel prices now, who wants to idle??? :(]

I agree with you about the fob... kinda cool. Well, let's see... 5 minutes in 7-11 while I get a slurpee to withstand the 100+ heat... . that's (1/12)*. 4gal=. 033 gallons used to idle. At 1. 50/gal that's 5 cents. At $3 a gallon that's 10 cents. I think I'll pay an extra 5 cents to get back into a 70 degree truck rather than a 120 degree truck... and if I had an '06 I'd just carry both fob-integrated keys so I could lock it with one while it's running. :)

Just went to the dealer yesterday to try one for myself. It will not work with the earlier systems. Wrong frequency. Only tried the keyless entry. Didn't want to buy the key and see if the ignition would work since the keyless entry wouldn't work.

Do they still make one to just unlock the truck, without the remote? I saw the key on the 06 I checked out but my concern is sometimes I have to carry the key while riding my dirt bike. This new key could end up under water or something like that. With an unlock only key, I could lock the new key in the truck and carry the old metal key.

Just buy a regular Dodge key and have it cut just like the sentry key. It'll lock and unlock, but not start the truck. That's what I carry in my wallet.

I've been thinking the same thing - I often have to carry a key when riding my stand-up jet ski. Nothing stays dry in that! I previously have destroyed many alarm remotes. Dirt bike is easy - tool pack. Although my luck, I will have it stashed in such a manner that a button is constantly pressed, and when I get back, the battery will be dead. Let me clarify, from my experience...

For those of you worried about letting the truck idle while not in it... The 06 models have a remote start option.

If it functions like most aftermarket units, you can simply activate it, and then remove the key from the ignition switch.

I was wondering the same thing. I have to carry so many keys it would be nice to switch to that new key with the built in fob. Did they just tell you it would not work or did they actually try and program it first?

Another thing to know about the 06 keys... ... ... ... . they are relatively fragile, drop it and it may quit. The batt contact may break off the ckt board.

They are just too large! I can't stand putting them in my pocket. At least with the old fob it will fold over, these things feel like you a pistol in your pocket!

Markram04. Did you have the key programed to your truck before you tried it?

I only tried the keyless entry. The keyless entry and the ignition work completely seperate from each other. Why program the ignition key if the keyless entry won't work? I would think that would be what all of us wanted! The keyless entry fob to disappear.
