Don’t chase 5-cents/gallon pricing. False economy.
Agreed that it is false economy. But I would add that there is another aspect that needs to be considered: Loyalty. If you get a bad load of diesel while saving a nickel a gallon, chances are you won't get any love when you complain to the company who owns the fuel station. If you buy your fuel from the same place, or same two places--i.e. in town station and on the road fuel station, and save all your receipts they are far more likely to cover your damage costs. No mom and pop business is going to pay to fix your truck if you complain their dirty, water-soaked fuel messed up your engine. You can try suing them, but you probably won't win unless several other people had the same experience and are also suing them. But spend several thousands on fuel at the same place over several years time and your loyalty will probably be rewarded.
And for what it's worth, I've averaged about 17 MPG over the 15 year, 334K mile life of my truck. That includes both city and highway driving, and towing/haul with the bed full, often at max weight.
