My truck has in the past sometimes started then died on first try then started right up and runs fine. This morniong I hit the start position, it starts then dies three times before it starts and stays on running what seems to be fine. My fuel mileage has never been great, about 16 empty at best and drops off to about 12 or 14 even pulling a light utility traile weighing no more than 2000 pounds. This is the 06 in my signature and is stock with 64,000 miles. Thanks. bg

try turning the key on, and momentarily bumping the starter like you are doing a fuel filter change... . then let it sit there with the key still on for approx 1 minute then see if it will start up normally. .

Do you run additives? Sounds a lot like the FCA is sticking. The mileage, well start checking injectors because thats the usual problem.

Wingate, I have tried this and it seems to start quicker. Cerberusiam, I run about 4 to 6 ounces of two cycle outboard oil to 35 gallons diesel. bg

In ambient temps over 40 degrees these engines should fire on a maximum slow 3 count. The manuals have issues, for some reason, with synching the cam and crank sensor where the autos do not.

Sometimes there is a problem, sometimes there is not. All you do is check things to make sure they are good.

Does it start and die if you do this? Or does it start and stay running? When did it get its last fuel filter? What brand of filter r u running? Aftermarket filtration? Have you checked lift pump supply pressure?

Wingate, it usually starts and stays lit after I do that. I have a dummy key that I carry in my poclket that will open the door. I have on occasion mistakenly tried to start it with that key and it fires then immmediately dies, that is what it acted like the other day when it died three times. The fuel filter is from Genos, the 10 micron, has maybe 5k on it, I will check tomorrow and see how long it has been as I do keep a record of that. I haven't checked the lift pump pressure but will do that also. Thanks, bg

6800 miles on the filter, drained fuel from filter is clear and clean, no sign of water. I don't see any smoke when it starts. I can't check lift pump output pressure as I don't have the adapter, will order one today. bg

My very stock '06, quite rarely fails to start when hot when I have stopped for fuel. It cranks but just won't fire. I've found that if I turn the key off and patiently count to 10 it will start. I just chalked it up to computer ideosyncracy.

Just wondering if the lift pump may be giving up the ghost. . ? Genos has been selling you a 10 micron filter for an 06 model?

a couple other random things come to mind... Load test both batteries to make sure you are keeping enough voltage to the ECM while in crank cycle, and unhooking both batteries for about an hour to reset the ECM.
Although it was not a no-start condition, my 06 experienced the dome light randomly freaking out. but I found that I could unhook the batteries for an hour and it would quit acting up for about 6 months. A reflash finally came out to cure it, but sometimes resetting the ECM helps. Seems there were some problematic ECMs on the 06 models as well, but I cannot remember what the symptoms were. I know Dodge had a TSB out on them at one time...
Have you had a chance to check the supply pressure to the pump yet?

Wingate, got the fitting from Geno's and checked the pressure today, bump starter, 10 pounds, running 10 pounds. Haven't tested the batteries yet but seems to turn over fasrt enough? bg

I have since replaced the batteries, with the sequence I was using it didn't make much difference, (turn on key, wait for heaters to cycle one tiome). Last several weeks when I start it I just go to start immediately and it kicks right off even in some chilly weather, usually turns two revolutions or so. bg
