So I am in the market for a new truck and have assumed that all the 6. 7's ( both 2007. 5's and 2008's) come with the DPF and all the other new emissions stuff. Is that correct? Or is there a holy grail of a 2007. 5 that has the 6. 7 and none of the emissions equipment?

Thanks
Mark

Update: I already answered my question. Thanks for looking though.

Mark,

To the best of my knowledge, the only way to get a "new" truck without all the emissions control equipment would be to find a new 2007 with the 5. 9L Cummins. You would have 325hp compared to 350 with the 6. 7L. Hind sight being what it is, I wish I had the '07 with a 5. 9. Take a look at my thread, "Turbo not kicking in" to giet a feel for what you might expect with the 6. 7L. There isn't any fix in place to date. We are sitting in Charleston, WV waiting for a new turbo to arrive, directly from Cummins, on Monday.

I just spoke with a friend of mine that keeps up with all the new vehicles and he said the same thing. Thank you Alton. I am back to looking only for a 5. 9.

I can tell you from experience driving about 10K per month the 6. 7 is a huge improvement over the 5. 9. While it is true there are some wrinkles in the software of these new trucks. over 90% of the issues are software and not hardware. You do have to change oil more often as it requires the use of the CJ-4 oil only and the regeneration heat and the high soot contamination due to the EGR valve causes the oil to break down faster.
As a person who drives for a living as a hot shot (courier) and lives in the truck, the bigger issue is having a dealer who supports you the customer and a Diesel Tech who is into the new technology and cares about your truck. my $0. 02

What sold me on the 6. 7 is the six speed auto trans

I have no regrets. My friend who is a master Chrysler tech who has done the flash updates for me and some other stuff took my truck for a few days and drove it for a few hundred miles. he said the 6. 7 with the six speed auto was worlds ahead of the 5. 9 with the 4 speed auto. after working on the 5. 9's for years and driving mine he said it has alot more power and could not see what anyone would want to get the 5. 9 with the 4 speed auto which is failure prone. the six speed auto puts the power to the ground much better with the added gears. I have over 6,000 miles now i had the CEL come on for a brief time only which was when my wife was driving it and she was to ginger on it so it got some soot in the turbo actuator it cleaned itself out and the light never came on again. I have the latest flash and I had to have the rear seats leather replaced since it tore in the same spot on both sides and the dvd system had issues since day one. these issues would have been with either engine. I am very pleased that I choose the 6. 7 and the 68rfe

I suggest you drive both of them and see which you like. i think you will have your answer as soon as you drive the 68rfe if you are in the market for an automatic. I do have one complaint is the lack of ULSD fuel in my area.

I live in a major metropolitan area between Washington DC and Baltimore

everyone I talk to tells me all the stations have it but they are not reading the sticker on the pump in detail. the other day I went to five stations that sell Diesel in a 1 mile radius and none of them had ULSD it is very frustrating.

Very very few reports on these sites about stock 48re failures. If a stock truck is on its 4th ot 5th auto trans eaither its being repaired and someone can't get it right or a owner is trashing the heck out of it or radiator cooler tank is stopped up. Seen this same sceniro several times on Nissans,Dodge,G. M. vehicles. I'm sure the 68re is a much stronger unit but the 48re has NOT a bad track record.

A "huge improvement" & "worlds ahead" ???? What kind of meat head would make such a statement? Just what are these improvements? Go ahead, tell us one... And worlds ahead of what? Maybe a 6. 0 or a 6. 4, but the 'ole 5. 9 was worlds ahead before it ever had a computer on it! Bottom line from where I'm looking, the Feds have destroyed the 8th wonder of the world.

Would have been GREAT if the 6 speed auto, exhaust brake and other improvements had showed up a few years ahead of Cats,DPFs,EGR,new fuels etc. Seems Chrysler or whoever they are bit off a big chuck having a new engine, trans, fuels and emmision equipment all happen in one year model. Hey not to hijack this thread but did they ever fix the damn AC ISSUES that have been haunting 3rd gens since 03?
