This is a British press release

The new block design has increased displacement from 3. 9 to 4. 5 litres (4 cylinder) and 5. 9 to 6. 7 litres (6 cylinder). The 6-cylinder ISBe moves up to 300ps (kilowatt??) and 1100Nm (that's 811 ft-lb!!!) peak torque.

So it's safe to assume the Dodge will get the same. Whether the 5. 9 will continue at reduced ratings, or be discontinued from Dodges remains to be seen.

Just in time for skyrocketing fuel prices. You have to hand it to the Detroit geniuses, neh?

Perhaps they will stuff the 4. 5 in something reasonable.

Don't forget that the British press release you posted is for buses & motorhomes.

I can't see - and wouldn't wanna PAY - the associated prices needed for both that engine, AND associated suspension and drivetrain upgrades an engine like that would necessitate...

I doubt the 6. 7L engine would weigh more than an aftermarket bumper and 10k electric winch.

IIRC, the Cat 3116 (6. 6L) engine is only about 2-300# more than a !SB.

They are doing this to make up for the decreased horsepower available out of the 5. 9 with the particulate trap, EGR, closed cranckase vent, and other goodies required to meet emissions.

Still, the HP rating is going to about 400 hp.

The block stays the same length, same bore, but stroke goes up, so the engine may be an inch taller ( half an inch on top, half inside the oil pan) to allow a longer crank.

I doubt it will weigh 100 lb more.

Seen a spread on the New Duramax in the new FOURWHEELER... ... ... ..... talk about impressive !!!!!! it has buku TQ & HP ... ... ... Cummins/DC is going to have to do something to keep up in the TQ wars

DM

notice our 610s have alot more hp than the regular ISBe motors as it is. No doubt they will do the same higher rev set up on the larger 6. 7 for the Rams to make Ford and Chevy run with their tails between their legs like they have for the last 8+ years. Also think how many aftermarket guys will make ways around all the emissions crap to give us back our power.

I don't know about that, unless I missed it, nothing in that release says it will meet US emissions in addition H/D applications have always had less to meet emission wise than L/D stuff like pick ups.

The 6. 7 may be coming but I wouldn't doubt if the Euro market sees it in 07 while it gets here in 09.

PS is a European equivalent of American horsepower (German: Pferdestärke = horse strength). The conversion is 1 PS = 0. 9863201652997627 hp (SAE).

Current top US ISBe bus engine is 275@2600 and 660@1600. Assuming similar increases when stroking to 6. 7L, this would be about 295@2600 and 800@1600. The Dodge engines hit their power peak at 2900 and redline in gear at 3200... making a mind-blowing rating of 400hp and 750 lb-ft possible, and a 375/700 rating very likely... both of which would beat the new Duramax and would send Ford scrambling (they still haven't hit 600 lb-ft yet).

As far as economy, I think this all depends on the ratios of the 68RFE. If it uses a double overdrive like the 545, that would definitely solve the mpg concerns. My 05 gets its best ileage at 52 mph/1500 rpm, with the 0. 69:1 overdrive gear. If the 68RFE comes in with OD gears of, let's say, 0. 77 and 0. 54, that 52 mph now jumps to 65 mph in 6th gear, and my mileage could improve an honest 3 mpg.

If that's indeed the case, I could see myself trading the 05 for an 08 for the improved highway mpg (my daily commute is 35 miles each way, 33 of it is interstate highway), and take the higher grunt as a bonus. Being able to market improved highway mileage with the bigger displacement, lower emissions, and higher output would make the Cummins the clear choice, no matter what your brand loyalty.
