Thinking about a VW beetle (Maybe TDI) for the wife

Does diesel fuel ever go bad........??

Has anyone else heard of new engine oil requirements for the 2007 model Diesels (any brand)?

I was talking with the owner of an oil change place and he was saying that the new diesels (2007) were requiring a C-7 (verses C-4?) rated oil that will only be available through dealers. Any info on this?

I thought they were going to be needing a CJ-4 oil instead of the CI-4 plus they currently offer????

Haven't heard about the C-7 thing...

Okay. Don't quote me on the C-7 or C-4 part, but the Shell link fills in some blanks.

The guy I was talking to mentioned a canister of some sort on the motors in addition to the filter that would be ruined (at great cost) if the wrong oil was used.

Smelled fishy to me, but I thought I'd throw it out here to the experts.

He was probably referring to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). However, I don't believe that can be fouled by failure to use the CJ-4 (or CI-4+) standard oil.

As far as I understand it, the latest emissions requirements have driven engine makers to "lean" on the oil to absorb more contaminants and tolerate a much harsher environment inside the engine. As a result, the standards for oil have changed. Running a CH-4 oil in a new tier III emissions engine (2007-later) can do damage to the engine over the long term.

Check out this thread for a little more info.

I find it amazing that I can usually recognize Ryan's posts without even looking to see who posted it. They are always so helpful, level headed, and non-confronting. He adds a lot to this family of friends here on the TDR. Thanks.
